In questo articolo si esamina la funzione e il significato ideologico nelle fonti letterarie della faba e il suo rapporto con i miti che coinvolgono la gens Fabia e Remo che sembrano formare un gruppo omogeneo di leggende. Le fave erano legumi essenziali nella dieta romana. È possibile ipotizzare che esse si siano ammantate di un'aura mistico-religiosa, che le rendeva ancor più speciali. Il significato infero che avevano presso i Romani è evidente osservando i rituali legati al calendario romano dove la faba è ricordata quattro volte in relazione con pratiche funerarie e con la morte di Remo. Secondo gli scrittori romani, la fava era seminata in due periodi distinti: nel mese di febbraio e in autunno, da ottobre fino ai primi di dicembre. È significativo che tutte le leggende e i rituali associati al calendario abbiano una naturale connessione con la coltivazione delle fave a febbraio. Attraverso il filtro della tradizione letteraria, tuttavia, può giungere solo una lontana eco della stratificazione mitica, rituale e ideologica che ha coinvolto i Fabii, Remo e la faba. |

This paper examines the function and the ideological meaning in the literary sources of the faba and its relationship with the myths involving the gens Fabia and Remus that appear to form a homogenous group of legends. Broad beans were legumes essential in the Roman diet. It is possible to suggest that they also were surrounded by a mystical-religious aura, which made them even more special. The funerary meaning of the faba for the Romans is also evident looking at the rituals associated to the Roman calendar where the faba was recalled four times in connection with the funerary practices and with the death of Remus. According to Roman writers, the broad bean was sown in two distinct periods: in February and autumn, from October until early December. It is significant that all the legends and rituals remembered associated to the calendar find a natural connection with the cultivation of beans in February Through the filter of the literary tradition, however, only a distant echo of the mythical, ritual, and ideological stratification that involved the Fabii, Remus and faba can be discerned. |
