The London Scene és una obra breu (77 pàgines en català) que consta de sis articles de Virginia Woolf sobre Londres, escrits per a la revista Good Housekeeping. No hi ha el monòleg interior en la mesura que podem trobar-lo en altres obres de Woolf, ni tampoc la complexitat en les oracions. És una obra que encaixa poc amb la imatge que s'associa amb les obres de ficció de l'autora. Woolf no escrivia una guia turística, ni un obra històrica sobre Londres, sinó uns textos sobre els llocs i el seu passat amb una mirada personal; això és més que una descripció costumista i més que una guia turística. La traducció de The London Scene havia de traslladar als lectors l'ambient de l'època d'una ciutat industrial i portuària en evolució, cosmopolita i metròpoli de l'imperi britànic entre les dues guerres mundials. Com havia de sonar Londres en català? Com Pla o Carner, Rodoreda o Roig: un estil reposat i àgil, elaborat, sofisticat, un registre enganyadorament planer. |

The London Scene is a short book (77 pages in its Catalan edition), six articles which Virginia Woolf wrote for Good Housekeeping. The stream of consciousness found in other works by Virginia Woolf will not be found here, and neither will the intricacy of text structure. The London Scene fits poorly with the idea associated to Virginia Woolf's fiction. Virginia Woolf was not writing a tourist guide, or a historical piece on London but texts with her personal view on the sites and their past. This transcends a realist depiction and a tourist guide. The translation of The London Scene must convey to the reader the atmosphere of a changing industrial port city, cosmopolitan and centre of the British Empire between the two World Wars. How should The London Scene sound in Catalan? Like Pla or Carner, Rodoreda or Roig - undisturbed, brisk, elaborate, sophisticated: a deceptively plain register. |
