Resum: The doctoral thesis Professional competences in Education for Sustainability from Complexity: approach and assessment tool aims to analyze the mobilization of teachers' competencies in Education for Sustainability (ES) in the case of the Learning Field of Cistercian Monasteries (CdAMC). This analysis aims to contribute to the competence approach in ES and their assessment from the perspective of complexity. For this purpose three investigation objectives are defined. The first is related with the construction of a teachers'competencies in ES framework from complexity. The second one, with the design and application of an instrument to evaluate the development of these competencies in educational settings. Finally, the third objective is linked to the analysis of the mobilization of competencies by two teachers of CdAMC. In order to achieve these three objectives, a research process is developed which is part of the interpretative paradigm and which utilizes a complementary qualitative approach. The case study is the modality of research that let the CdAMC case compression. Regarding the first objective, a framework of professional competencies in ES in the classroom from complexity -called CESC- is proposed. It adds complexity to the existing competency frameworks -CSCT (Sleurs, 2008) and Learning for the Future (UNECE, 2012) and it is structured in four competence domains --Learning to know, Learning to Live Together, Learning to be and Learning to do-, six categories of complexity -Connections, Dialogue, Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking and uncertainty - and fifty three teacher competencies. When it comes to the second objective, the approach of the CESC, the validations by a group of experts, a triangulation process and the application to the CdAMC makes possible the design of an analytical tool -a rubric- for the evaluation of professional competencies. The structural components of this rubric are: (i) six CESC categories of complexity (Connections, Dialogue, Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking and uncertainty); (ii) four competence domains for each categories (Learning to know, Learning to Live Together, Learning to be, Learning to do); (iii) twenty-four ES professional competencies; (iv) four levels of development (Novel, Beginner, Intermediate and Expert); (v) descriptors for each competence, prepared as evaluation indicators that define concrete actions observed and that respond to a gradient of complexity. Finally, regarding the third objective, the mobilization of these competences by the teachers is represented by competence patters that show a solid and consolidated educational model from the CdAMC. It shows, too, that there is a relation between the complex training received by teachers beforehand and the type of competences that they mobilize and the level of expertise that they have. Certain shortcomings were also observed in the teachers: competencies essentially mobilized are related to Connections, Dialogue and Creativity categories and focused on the Learning to know and Learning to do domains and, at the same time, the levels of expert in the implementation of activities are lower than in the approach. Based on these results, we can affirm that this research represents a contribution to the ES competence approach and the lack of evaluation instruments in this area. The CESC becomes a theoretical contribution that facilitates the mobilization of competencies in ES from complexity by educators. The design of the rubric with a high level of applicability and transferability becomes a methodological contribution which facilitates the evaluation of these competencies by teachers and teaching teams. Related to the case study some guidelines about the opportunity and the need of basic and ongoing teachers training to advance about the mobilization of professional competencies in ES from the complexity are proposed.
