Cet article interroge les liens entre polysémie, analogie et figement à partir d'une étude de cas: l'emploi et l'extension de la construction «GN1 is in GN2» en anglais, où GN1 fait référence à l'être humain et le GN2 à un vêtement ou un accessoire vestimentaire (par exemple: She was in a coat, in her makeup, in high heels). A partir de l'étude de ses emplois, nous envisageons la possibilité du règlement de cette construction sur une analogie fonctionnelle portant sur le type de relation entre le référent du GN1 et celui du GN2. L'apport de la préposition, celui de be, et le rôle du modèle constitué par l'ensemble sont discutés. Quelques remarques contrastives sont proposées avec le français. |

In this paper, a type of examples is examined where polysemy issues can be thought to meet questions about analogy and idiomaticity: that of "NP1 is in NP2" strings in which NP1 refers to a human being and NP2 refers to a piece of clothing or a fashion accessory (cf. She was in a coat, in her makeup, in high heels). The contexts in which these strings are used are examined, and what is suggested is that the use of "NP1 is in NP2" is linked to a functional analogy bearing on the type of relationship that is construed between the referent of P1 and that of NP2. The respective roles of the preposition, of be, and of the whole sequence taken as a possible template are discussed. Some contrastive remarks are made with French. |
