À la cathédrale de Barcelone, les peintures des volets des grandes orgues, exécutées par Pedro Seraphín, ou Pere Serafí, surnommé «lo Grech» (qui fut aussi poète), trahissent nombre d'emprunts aux compositions de la Scuola nuova et du Grand Scipion. Ceux-ci n'apparaissent cependant pas dans le sens des tapisseries, mais bien dans celui, inversé, des cartons qui en furent préparés à Bruxelles, où ils restèrent. La main de Seraphín se reconnaît en outre, à côté de celle de Tommaso Vincidor, dans une partie de ce qui subsiste de ces cartons ainsi que dans des dessins préparatoires à la tenture des Jeux d'enfants. Seraphín a donc dû accompagner Vincidor à Bruxelles quand celuici y fut envoyé par Raphaël en 1520. On retrouve Seraphín à Rome dans les fresques du palais d'Andrea della Valle, exécutées peu avant la mort du cardinal en 1534, ainsi qu'à la Trinité-des-Monts, à la voûte de la chapelle Turchi, que Vasari attribue à un peintre calabrais, en précisant que ce n'était pas Marco Cardisco: une définition convenant parfaitement à celui qui était surnommé «lo Grech». Seraphín est également l'auteur des gravures monogrammées PS qui furent exécutées à Rome entre 1535 et 1538. Il dut, par conséquent, revenir, sans doute plusieurs fois, dans cette ville après son mariage à Barcelone en 1534. Les toiles des grandes orgues de la cathédrale laissent aussi percer la première formation que le peintre-poète dut recevoir à Naples, permettant de lui rendre à titre d'hypothèse l'Adoration des mages du Musée San Martino, attribuée erronément à Marco Cardisco. |

In the cathedral of Barcelona, the paintings of the shutters of the organ, made by Pedro Seraphín, or Pere Serafí, nicknamed 'lo Grech' (who was also a poet), reveal several borrowings from the Scuola Nuova and the Grand Scipion compositions. However, the borrowings do not appear in the sense of the tapestries, but rather in the inverted sense of the cartoons, prepared in Brussels, where they remained. Seraphín's hand can also be found, moreover, together with that of Tommaso Vincidor, in part of what remains of the cartoons themselves, as well as in some preparatory drawings for the Giochi di putti tapestries. Therefore we can assume that Seraphín accompanied Vincidor when Raphael sent his pupil to Brussels in 1520. Seraphín reappears in Rome in the frescoes for Andrea della Valle's palace, executed shortly before the cardinal's death in 1534, and in Trinità dei Monti, on the vault of the Turchi chapel, attributed by Vasari to a Calabrian painter, but specifically not Marco Cardisco: a definition that fits perfectly the man nicknamed 'lo Grech'. Seraphín was also the author of the engravings monogrammed 'PS', made in Rome between 1535 and 1538. Accordingly, he must have returned there, perhaps several times, after his wedding in Barcelona in 1534. The canvases for the organ of the Cathedral also reveal some remains of his first Neapolitan training, allowing to attribute to him, hypothetically, the Adoration of the Magi of the San Martino Museum, erroneously given to Marco Cardisco. |
