En este artículo se aportan datos sobre la hagiografía hispánica de santa Margarita de Antioquía, debido a la carencia de estudios sobre la santa anteriores al siglo xiii. Por otra parte, se ha estudiado la iconografía del diablo a la luz de los textos contemporáneos. Ello ha permitido resolver problemas iconográficos que no habían obtenido una respuesta satisfactoria en la historiografía del siglo xx. Se analizan los modelos iconográficos de los diablos Rufo y Belzebub, que se presentan bajo la apariencia de criaturas fantásticas. También se establecen afinidades y diferencias de este frontal de Santa Margarita, datado en el siglo xii, con otros ciclos martiriales europeos de la misma época dedicados a la mártir de Antioquía. Finalmente, cabe destacar que todos los fragmentos literarios de la passio de santa Margarita, que se han utilizado para explicar los elementos iconográficos, se han traducido por primera vez del latín al castellano. |

This article provides information about the Spanish hagiography of St. Margaret of Antioch because of the lack of studies on this saint prior to the 13th century. On the other hand, the iconography of the devil has been studied in light of contemporary texts. This has allowed for the resolution of iconographical problems that did not receive a satisfactory response in 20th century historiography. The iconographical models of the devils, Rufus and Beelzebub that appear as fantastic creatures are analyzed. Also, affinities and differences of this altar-frontal of St. Margaret, dated from the 12th century, are established, along with other European martyr related cycles of the same period dedicated to the martyr of Antioch. Lastly, it is worth highlighting that all the literary fragments of the passio of St. Margaret, that have been used to explain the iconographical elements, have been translated for the first time from Latin to Spanish. |
