Abstract:	La tradicional relación prensa-público se ha visto profundamente alterada, tanto por las oportunidades de participación que ofrecen los medios digitales como por su contextualización en un ciberentorno en que ya no es posible entender la figura del receptor pasivo. Sin embargo, un breve recorrido por estos espacios demuestra que la prensa no está aprovechando esta ocasión para liderar nuevas formas de participación a favor de una ciudadanía democrática. Las facultades de ciencias de la comunicación pueden impulsar investigaciones que orienten a estudiantes y profesionales, para contribuir a desarrollar nuevas formas adecuadas a la realidad mediática y social actual.
Abstract:	The traditional relationship between the press and its readers is currently undergoing major alteration through the opportunity for participation offered by digital technology and its contextualization in cyberspace where it is no longer possible to understand the receptor as being passive. Nevertheless a brief examination of that cyberspace tells us that the press is not taking advantage of this opportunity to lead new forms of participation that can be of benefit to democratic society. Faculties of communication sciences should promote research to orientate both students and professional journalists by contributing to the development of new forms of participation that are in keeping with the present realities of the media and social demands.
