Abstract: This work is a descriptive documental investigation that pretends to answer the question: how to study the groups within the communicative perspective. To carry out this objective two general theories of group communication are studied: the Functional Theory developed by Gouran and Hirokawa (1983,1986,1996) and the Structuration Theory mainly developed by Poole, Seibold & McPhee (1986,1996); Both theories are concerned by how the communication influences the decision making process within the small groups. These theories are analized at a conceptual level and are shown the scopes and limitations of both perspectives; it is also studied the context in which they are insert. By context I understand the conceptual elements, the set of definitions, methodology, proposals of classification and their categories as well as the models of study that influence and are influenced by the creation, application, modification and defense of the theories object of this thesis. This investigation work starts with the the revision of the different proposals with which the group is defined and the way it is classified on different types; it follows a multitheoretic perspective that is to say focusing the group from alternative disciplines such as Social Psychology, Sociology and Communication. At the end of the chapter a personal analysis model for studying the group is presented. The second chapter, entitled: «Investigation Paradigms in organizational communication», is composed of two large parts: the first is referred to the concept of paradigm, introduced by Kuhn (1962); several definitions are presented, it is explained how the paradigms emerge and what are their principal characteristics; also they are expose in comparative form the principal features of three paradigms: funcionalist, interpretative and critique. The second part is referred to how the concept of paradigm is incorporated in communication and how it is used by different authors as a category to classified the different theoretical proposals in organizational communication. It is also studied how the term «discourse» has been introduced as an investigation alternative more flexible than the paradigms and agreed with the current reality. The third chapter is entitled: "Theories of group communication: characterization and context". In this part they are analized the concepts of theory, communication theory and group communication theory; it is studied the context where those theories emerged; their own problematic and the way such theorethical work has been classified using different models. It is intended to show which are the the most important theories in group communication and to illustrate their peculiarities. The fourth chapter corresponds to the Functional Theory in Group Decision-making. The central point consists of explaining how the communication affects the decision-making process. Therefore it is spoken of the communication; of the functions of the communication; of what consists the decision-making process, which are their requirements, which are the social restrictions that limit the effective decisions and is presented a general decision-making model. Furthermore they are included the premises and hypothesis used in this theory, the methodology and the results of some of the empirical investigations. Finally the fifth chapter is referred to the Structuration Theory in Small Group Communication. The central point is to analyze how the communication processes affect the results of group. Have special relevancy concepts such as: action, interaction, appropriation, structure, rules and resources as well as systems and social practices. Furthermore they are presented several models as the Action Model, the Model of Decisions Development and the Contingencies Model. Also it is spoken of the empirical investigation and the methodology applied. It is also presented the Theory of the Adaptative Structuration as a variant of the Structuration Theory.
