Science and sciencie teaching in Spain : a historical perspective |

Desde una filosofía docente que concede tanta importancia a la enseñanza de la naturaleza y métodos de las ciencias como a la enseñanza de los contenidos científicos en los niveles básicos de nuestro sistema educativo, se recuerdan las ideas sobre la ciencia expuestas por las principales corrientes filosóficas y científicas españolas de la edad moderna, la escolástica y la ecléctica, enfrentadas entre sí en los siglos xvii y xviii, y las de los regeneracionistas y conservadores del xix español. Ese doble enfrentamiento se plasmó en una serie de escritos, denominados a finales del xix «La polémica de la ciencia española», que permiten ver con sorprendente claridad las luces y sombras de la herencia cultural recibida. Entre las luces destacamos las notables contribuciones de algunos pensadores españoles renacentistas a las fases iniciales de la renovación científica europea. Entre las sombras, el secular anacronismo de unas comunidades científicas que, al decir de Cajal, profesaron una «ciencia muerta», y el bajo rendimiento de la ciencia española desde el siglo xvii hasta principios del xx, al menos. Se asocia este bajo rendimiento a la general incomprensión o desconocimiento de las filosofías y metodologías científicas que emergieron en Europa en el siglo xvii, se comentan algunas de las explicaciones dadas al respecto, y al hilo de esta revisión histórica, se hacen algunas consideraciones que pudieran ser de utilidad para la enseñanza de las ciencias en nuestro país. |

We believe that teaching about the nature and the methods of sciences at an early stage of education is as important as teaching the content of scientific disciplines. From this pedagogical standpoint, we review the ideas on science held by the main scientific schools of modern era Spain, the «scholastic» and the «eclectics», who stood against each other during the xvii and xviii centuries, and those of the «progressives» and «conservatives» of the xix century. That double confrontation was recorded in a series of writings which was called 'The polemics of Spanish science» at the end of the xix century. This polemics show with surprising clarity the good and evil of today's cultural heritage in Spain. Among the good we emphasise the important contributions that some xvi century Spanish philosophers made to the initial phase of the European scientific revolution. Among the evil, the lasting anachronism of the above mentioned scientific communities, which, as Cajal said, professed a «dead science», and the low yield of Spanish science from the xvii century until, at least, the beginning of the xx century. We relate this low yield to the fact that Spanish thinkers ignored or misunderstood the philosophies and methodologies of the sciences which emerged in Europe from the XVIIth century and, in parallel to this historical review, we draw some conclusions that could be useful to the teaching of sciences in Spain. |
