Abstract:	En la jerarquía filológica, por lo menos en el ambiente norteamericano, la traducción goza de menos prestigio que los estudios históricos y críticos. Se suele considerar que el verdadero trabajo intelectual consiste en analizar las obras desde algún punto de vista teórico. Sin embargo, a pesar de todas las matizaciones que quepa hacer en el proceso de elección de las obras, son en última instancia los traductores quienes con sus decisiones hacen las traducciones. El autor, que ha publicado una compilación de traducciones renacentistas sobre el tema de Hero y Leandro en la literaturas peninsulares (2006), defiende la vía de los trabajos de recopilación de traducciones como forma de profundización en las obras y en la historia propia literaria y hace un llamamiento para el acometimiento de empresas similares.
Abstract:	In the hierarchy of philological pursuits, at least in the North-American context, translation enjoys less prestige than historical and critical studies. It is generally held that real scholarship involves the analysis of literary works from some theoretical point of view. Nevertheless, despite all the necessary caveats regarding the process whereby works are selected for translation, in the last analysis it is the translators, through their decision-making processes, who actually produce the translations. The author, who has published a collection of translations of Renaissance texts on the theme of Hero and Leander in Iberian literature (2006), argues that assembling collections of translations is a valuable means of deepening our insight into literary works as well as literary history itself, and invites others to undertake similar projects.
