Why Are There No Locative Conjunctions in Spanish?

Resum:	The main purpose of this paper is to explore why there are no locative subordinating conjunctions in Spanish. As we will see, the absence of this type of conjunctions is due, on the one hand, to its lexical-grammatical properties and, on the other hand, to the semantic structure of locative expressions. Adverbial subordinating conjunctions share properties with both lexical and functional heads. They share with complementizers the requirement that they take an extended projection of the verb as their complement. At the same time, just like lexical categories such as prepositions, they have lexical content and are associated with an argument structure. In this sense, adverbial subordinating conjunctions can be seen as semantic functions which can express several types of relations and take events or states as their internal argument. However, the semantic structure of spatial expressions must contain a place function that takes as argument a conceptual constituent corresponding to the semantic category Thing. The reason for the non-existence of locative subordinating conjunctions is, then, the incompatibility between categorial and semantic requirements in their complement.
Resum:	L'objectiu principal d'aquest article és explorar per què no hi ha conjuncions subordinants loca- tives en castellà. Com veurem, l'absència d'aquest tipus de conjuncions és deguda, d'una banda, a les seves propietats lexicogramaticals i, de l'altra, a l'estructura semàntica de les expressions locatives. Les conjuncions adverbials subordinants comparteixen propietats tant amb els nuclis lèxics com amb els funcionals. Comparteixen amb els complementadors el requeriment que han de prendre una projecció estesa del verb com a complement. Al mateix temps, igual que les cate- gories lèxiques com ara les preposicions, tenen contingut lèxic i s'associen amb una estructura argumental. En aquest sentit, les conjuncions adverbials subordinants es poden veure com a fun- cions semàntiques que poden expressar diversos tipus de relacions i prendre esdeveniments o estats com a argument intern. Tanmateix, l'estructura semàntica de les expressions espacials ha de contenir una funció de lloc que prengui com a argument un constituent conceptual correspo- nent a la categoria semàntica Cosa. La raó de la no existència de les conjuncions locatives sub- ordinants és, doncs, la incompatibilitat entre els requeriments categorials i semàntics del seu complement.
