(1) Background: despite the fact that nowadays the genus Vulpes Frisch, 1775, is the most diverse among extant Canidae, its fossil record is utterly scarce, especially in the Asian Pliocene. The sparse nature of this record further complicates the reconstruction of the evolutionary scenario to fit these taxa with extant species. [...]

"Maldito Oro. Riqueza, reparto y miseria de los beneficios de las conquistas de Alejandro
/
Antela Bernárdez, Borja (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona)
La campaña macedonia de conquista de Asia dirigida por Alejandro Magno proporcionó una enorme cantidad de beneficio, que se obtuvo a través de la explotación de los recursos naturales y del botín material, pero sobre todo de la esclavización de población capturada en el territorio de conquista. [...] The Macedonian campaign in Asia led by Alexander the Great provided an enormous amount of profit. The wealth obtained (both from the exploitation of natural resources and material booty and, above all, from the enslavement of the people captured in conquered territories) had a varying impact on the contemporary Greek world, including huge benefits for Alexander and his noblemen. A new small-sized lynx from Longdan, Gansu Province, China, Lynx hei sp. nov. , is described in this study. The new species displays the characteristic Lynx generic traits, such as distinct buccal grooves in the upper canine, presence of an anterior groove in the upper canine, absence of upper premolar 2, and a moderately developed mastoid process, but it is markedly smaller than the previously described Lynx issiodorensis specimens from the same site and is also smaller overall than most living species, comparable to Lynx rufus in size. Homo erectus s. l. is key for deciphering the origin and subsequent evolution of genus Homo. However, the characterization of this species is hindered by the existence of multiple variants in both mainland and insular Asia, as a result of divergent chronogeographical evolutionary trends, genetic isolation, and interbreeding with other human species.
