10 p, 949.6 KB Synonymous Codon Pair Recoding of the HIV-1 env Gene Affects Virus Replication Capacity / Jordan de Paiz, Ana (Institut Germans Trias i Pujol. Institut de Recerca de la Sida IrsiCaixa) ; Franco Cirera, Sandra (Institut Germans Trias i Pujol. Institut de Recerca de la Sida IrsiCaixa) ; Martinez, Miguel Angel (Institut Germans Trias i Pujol. Institut de Recerca de la Sida IrsiCaixa)
Synonymous codon pair deoptimization is an efficient strategy for virus attenuation; however, the underlying mechanism remains controversial. Here, we optimized and deoptimized the codon pair bias (CPB) of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) envelope (env) gene to investigate the influence of env synonymous CPB recoding on virus replication capacity, as well as the potential mechanism. Biodegradation of lower chlorinated benzenes (tri-, di- and monochlorobenzene) was assessed at a coastal aquifer contaminated with multiple chlorinated aromatic hydrocarbons. Field-derived microcosms, established with groundwater from the source zone and amended with a mixture of lower chlorinated benzenes, evidenced biodegradation of monochlorobenzene (MCB) and 1,4-dichlorobenzene (1,4-DCB) in aerobic microcosms, whereas the addition of lactate in anaerobic microcosms did not enhance anaerobic reductive dechlorination.
Latin senex 'old [man]' shows a stem alternation senec-/sen-. Our aim in this paper is to prove that this alternation was originated in the need of attenuation, caused by the pragmatic effect of sen- 'old [man]' in the vocative, by means of diminutive derivation. [...]

Many aquifers around the world are impacted by toxic chlorinated methanes derived from industrial processes due to accidental spills. Frequently, these contaminants co-occur with chlorinated ethenes and/or chlorinated benzenes in groundwater, forming complex mixtures that become very difficult to remediate. [...]

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) has a biased nucleotide composition different from human genes. This raises the question of how evolution has chosen the nucleotide sequence of HIV-1 that is observed today, or to what extent the actual encoding contributes to virus replication capacity, evolvability and pathogenesis. A decade ago the discovery of the target mimicry regulatory process on the activity of a mature microRNA (miRNA) enabled for the first time the customized attenuation of miRNA activity in plants. That powerful technology was named MIMIC and was based on engineering the IPS1 long noncoding transcript to become complementary to the miRNA under study. [...]
