Beliefs lead to action and are manifested in action. We act according to what we believe, and not always do our beliefs constitute knowledge. It is beliefs that lead us (given certain desires) to act, and as these may be false, our attempts are sometimes (for this reason) frustrated: our actions do not succeed. [...]

The Middle Ages, in their lengthy centuries of existence, sum up a polysemous era. It is an epoch that bridges the gap between a preceding time, which it knows and from which it extracts enhanced knowledge and experience, and a succeeding time, which it ignores as a human period but knows at a suprahuman level, a knowledge coded as the end of times, which they consider imminent, although that imminence may take centuries to come true. Using data from modified dictator games and a mixture-of-types estimation technique, we find a clear relationship between a classification of subjects into four different types of interdependent preferences (selfish, social welfare maximizers, inequity averse, and competitive) and the beliefs subjects hold about others' distributive choices in a nonstrategic environment.
The hot hand phenomenom (also known as hot hat effect or streaks) refers to a hypothetical performance increase after chaining several trials successfully. Three types of research are identified in sports contexts: (1) focused on the (in) existence of streaks, (2) on the psychological mechanisms of human belief in streaks and (3) on possible behavioral consequences caused by belief in streaks. [...]
Dipartimento di Fisica) ; Pérez Castillo, Isaac (King's College London. Department of Mathematics)
Quite generally, constraint-based metabolic flux analysis describes the space of viable flux configurations for a metabolic network as a high-dimensional polytope defined by the linear constraints that enforce the balancing of production and consumption fluxes for each chemical species in the system. According to a belief widespread among older persons in the south of Sardinia, certain personas were divinely condemned while still alive for crimes against public morality. Such persons, so it is said, were mostly wealthy landowners who lived in the middle years of the last century. [...]

16 p, 403.8 KB Beliefs and Practices towards Teaching and Learning Grammar : A Multicase Study / Santos Ferreira, Patricia (Escola Superior de Educaçao de Lisboa)
This text presents a multi-case study focused on 5th and 6th grades' (10 - 12 years-old students) teachers' beliefs and practices towards the process of teaching and learning grammar. Current practices of grammar instruction are connected to prescriptive approaches, outdated, disconnected from linguistic theory, and ineffective at improving communicative skills. [...]

This paper argues: a) that there are religious statements in a proper sense, and they can be considered as a particular case of metaphysical statements; b) that the category of «reasonableness» (and not those of «rationality» and «irrationality») allows for an aproximation of their epistemological status, and c) that, inasmuch as they are objects of belief, questioning their reasonableness is also ultimately questioning the nature of belief and the relationship between believing and thinking.

With beliefs over the outcomes of coin-tosses as our primitive, we formalize the Law of Small Numbers (Tversky and Kahneman (1974)) by an axiom that expresses a belief that the sample mean of any sequence will tend towards the coin's perceived bias along the entire path. [...]

47 p, 651.6 KB Endogenous uncertainty and credit crunches / Straub, Ludwig ; Ulbricht, Robert
We develop a theory of endogenous uncertainty where the ability of investors to learn about firm-level fundamentals declines during financial crises. At the same time, higher uncertainty reinforces financial distress of firms, giving rise to "belief traps" - a persistent cycle of uncertainty, pessimistic expectations, and financial constraints, through which a temporary shortage of funds can develop into a long-lasting funding problem for firms.
