21 p, 955.0 KB Beyond rationalization : voting out of duty or expressing duty after voting? / Galais Gonzàlez, Carolina (Université de Montréal) ; Blais, André (Université de Montréal)
It is a standard practice to include a Duty term in explanatory models of turnout. Yet the relationship between duty and voting is not that clear. Does duty really trigger voting or is it the reverse? To address this question, we present cross-lagged panel estimations of the impact of duty on turnout and of turnout on duty with two different datasets: a two-wave panel Canadian survey conducted in 2008 and 2009 and a four-wave Spanish panel conducted between 2010 and 2012. 25 p, 192.9 KB La condición «cismática» de la representación : lo escénico y lo inconsciente en tiempos de datificación.
This paper reviews Louis Althusser's treatment of Marxist Darstellung, in the framework of the project to develop the concept of structural causality. Taking previous research by Etienne Balibar, Vittorio Morfino, George Hartley, Warren Montag and Aurelio Sainz Pezonaga, the paper reconstructs some of the problems underlying the series that articulates, in Althusserian writing, the Marxist categories of Darstellung, Verbindung and Gliederung with the metaphor of the authorless theatre. 14 p, 1014.0 KB Socioeconomic disparities in suicide : Causation or confounding? / Lorant, Vincent (Université Catholique de Louvain) ; Kapadia, Dharmi (University of Manchester) ; Perelman, Julian (Universidade NOVA de Lisboa) ; Borrell i Thió, Carme (Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica Sant Pau) ; Rodríguez-Sanz, Maica (Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica Sant Pau) ; Kalediene, Ramune ; Leinsalu, Mall ; Regidor, Enrique ; Wojtyniak, Bogdan ; Strand, Bjørn Heine ; Bopp, Matthias ; Mackenbach, Johan
Background Despite an overall reduction in suicide, educational disparities in suicide have not decreased over the last decade. The mechanisms behind educational disparities in suicide, however, remain unclear: low educational status may increase the risk of suicide ("causation") or low educational status and suicide may share confounders. 22 p, 2.3 MB Telecoupling as a framework to support a more nuanced understanding of causality in land system science / Busck-Lumholt, Louise Marie (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Coenen, Johanna (Universidad de Leuphana Lüneburg) ; Persson, Joel (University of Copenhagen - Koslashbenhavns universitet) ; Frohn Pedersen, Anna (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) ; Mertz, Ole (University of Copenhagen - Koslashbenhavns universitet) ; Corbera, Esteve (Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats)
This article illustrates the potential of the telecoupling framework to improve causal attribution in land system science (LSS). We shed light on the distinct analytical approaches that have characterized telecoupling research to date, how these can contribute to LSS with new insights, and whether such insights can improve causal attribution. Causality is the most important topic in the history of western science, and since the beginning of the statistical paradigm, its meaning has been reconceptualized many times. Causality entered into the realm of multi-causal and statistical scenarios some centuries ago. [...]

Exemplar dedicat a: Causalidad y manifestación en el neoplatonismo medieval.
This paper examines Robert Kilwardby's (ca. 1215-1279) treatment of causal necessity and contingency. In his Commentary on Aristotle's Posterior Analytics and in his De ortu scientiarum, Kilwardby seems to be particularly concerned with the precarious epistemological status of ethics and physics insofar as these disciplines deal with contingent events. [...]
