41 p, 626.1 KB The use of equity financing in debt renegotiation / Silaghi, Florina (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Empresa)
Debt renegotiation is often modeled as pure debt for equity or debt for debt swaps in the theoretical literature. However, the empirical evidence in the debt repurchase literature shows that a combination of debt and equity, along with asset sales is used in renegotiation. [...]

27 p, 4.7 MB Circularity, entropy, ecological conflicts and LFFU / Martínez Alier, Joan (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals)
The economy is not circular, it is increasingly entropic. Energy from the photosynthesis of the distant past, fossil fuels, is burned and dissipated. Even without further economic growth the industrial economy would need new supplies of energy and materials extracted from the "commodity frontiers", producing also more waste (including excessive amounts of greenhouse gases). [...]

Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Kallis, Giorgos (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals)
Under what circumstances are interest-bearing loans compatible with an economy without much growth? The question is becoming increasingly important given a tendency towards declining growth in industrialised economies and increasing evidence that continued growth is incompatible with environmental sustainability. [...]

Based on eleven months of engaged ethnographic research with the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages (PAH) in Barcelona and Sabadell, this article proposes that the financialization of housing goes hand in glove with the financialization of life itself, which includes subjectivity and the body. 6 p, 548.1 KB Is it too late to bail out the troubled countries in the Eurozone? / Conesa, Juan Carlos (Stony Brook University. Department of Economics) ; Kehoe, Timothy J. (University of Minnesota. Department of Economics)
In January 1995, US President Bill Clinton organized a bailout for Mexico that imposed penalty interest rates and induced the Mexican government to reduce its debt, ending the debt crisis. Can the Troika (European Commission, European Central Bank, and International Monetary Fund) organize similar bailouts for the troubled countries in the eurozone? Our analysis suggests that debt levels are so high that bailouts with penalty interest rates could induce the eurozone governments to default rather than reduce their debt. [...]

The paper denounces Europe's war against refugees and migrants. It suggests that women could strategically find their best allies in these groups. Both women and refugees/migrants are "missing citizens" of sorts, and share the interest of deconstructing the curent neoliberal and masculinist hegemony. [...]
49 p, 1015.2 KB On the optimal design of a financial stability fund / Ábrahám, Árpád ; Cárceles Poveda, Eva ; Barcelona Graduate School of Economics
A Financial Stability Fund set by a union of sovereign countries can improve countries' ability to share risks, borrow and lend, with respect to the standard instrument used to smooth fluctuations: sovereign debt financing. [...]

55 p, 1.2 MB Failure to launch : housing, debt overhang, and the inflation option / Hedlund, Aaron ; Barcelona Graduate School of Economics
Can inflating away nominal mortgage liabilities effectively combat recessions? I address this question using a model of illiquid housing, endogenous credit supply, and equilibrium default. I show that, in an ordinary recession, temporarily raising the inflation target has only modest or even counterproductive effects. [...]

45 p, 963.0 KB The maturity structure of sovereign debts within a solidarity zone / Soyres, Constance de
This paper characterizes the optimal bailout maturity structure for a sovereign on the verge of a default. I find that buying back long-term debt is strictly optimal when it can prevent a default today and in the future. [...]

45 p, 732.7 KB Debt dilution and debt overhang / Jungherr, Joachim ; Schot, Immo
We introduce long-term debt (and a maturity choice) into a standard model of firm financing and investment. This allows us to study two distortions of investment: (1. ) Debt dilution distorts firms' choice of debt which has an indirect effect on investment; (2. [...]

49 p, 1.6 MB Debt sustainability and the terms of official support / Corsetti, Giancarlo ; Erce, Aitor ; Uy, Timothy

42 p, 760.7 KB Debt seniority and sovereign debt crises / Ari, Anil ; Corsetti, Giancarlo ; Dedola, Luca
Is the seniority structure of sovereign debt neutral for a government's decision between defaulting and raising surpluses? In this paper, we address this question using a model of debt crises where a discretionary government endogenously chooses distortionary taxation and whether to apply an optimal haircut to bondholders. [...]

70 p, 1.3 MB Sovereign risk and bank risk-taking / Ari, Anil
I propose a dynamic general equilibrium model in which strategic interactions between banks and depositors may lead to endogenous bank fragility and slow recovery from crises. When banks' investment decisions are not contractible, depositors form expectations about bank risk-taking and demand a return on deposits according to their risk. [...]

60 p, 2.1 MB Fiscal consolidation programs and income inequality / Brinca, Pedro ; Ferreira, Miguel H. ; Franco, Francesco ; Holter, Hans A. ; Malafry, Laurence
Following the Great Recession, many European countries implemented fiscal consolidation policies aimed at reducing government debt. Using three independent data sources and three different empirical approaches, we document a strong positive relationship between higher income inequality and stronger recessive impacts of fiscal consolidation programs across time and place. 38 p, 625.2 KB Sovereign defaults and banking crises / Sosa-Padilla, César
Episodes of sovereign default feature three key empirical regularities in connection with the banking systems of the countries where they occur: (i) sovereign defaults and banking crises tend to happen together, (ii) commercial banks have substantial holdings of government debt, and (iii) sovereign defaults result in major contractions in bank credit and production.
