The possibility of using the elemental compositions of species as a tool to identify species/genotype niche remains to be tested at a global scale. We investigated relationships between the foliar elemental compositions (elementomes) of trees at a global scale with phylogeny, climate, N deposition and soil traits. [...]

Departament de Genètica i de Microbiologia) ; Cano-Fernández, Hugo (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Genètica i de Microbiologia)
A foundational idea of evo-devo is that morphological variation is not isotropic, that is, it does not occur in all directions. Instead, some directions of morphological variation are more likely than others from DNA-level variation and these largely depend on development. [...]

12 p, 2.9 MB Tooth and long bone scaling in Sardinian ochotonids (Early Pleistocene-Holocene): Evidence for megalodontia and its palaeoecological implications / Moncunill Solé, Blanca (Università degli Studi Roma Tre. Body size is a useful character to unravel the biology of fossil taxa and, indirectly, the palaeoenvironment in which they lived. However, the reliability of size proxies is debated, particularly among insular endemics in which large teeth relative to body size have been observed. [...]

11 p, 1.8 MB Chromosomal evolution in Raphicerus antelope suggests divergent X chromosomes may drive speciation through females, rather than males, contrary to Haldane's rule / Robinson, Terence J. (Stellenbosch University. Department of Botany and Zoology) ; Cernohorska, Halina (Veterinary Research Institute) ; Kubickova, Svatava (Veterinary Research Institute) ; Vozdova, Miluse (Veterinary Research Institute) ; Musilova, Petra (Veterinary Research Institute) ; Ruiz-Herrera Moreno, Aurora (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Biologia Cel·lular, de Fisiologia i d'Immunologia) ; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Biotecnologia i de Biomedicina "Vicent Villar Palasí"
Chromosome structural change has long been considered important in the evolution of post-zygotic reproductive isolation. The premise that karyotypic variation can serve as a possible barrier to gene flow is founded on the expectation that heterozygotes for structurally distinct chromosomal forms would be partially sterile (negatively heterotic) or show reduced recombination. [...]

The aim of this paper is to improve our knowledge of the cognitive process leading to the recognition of the police institution as trustworthy. Based on evolutionary theory, we hypothesized that the cognitive mechanisms underpinning trust in institutions must be the same as those sculpted by evolution to assure trust in social interactions. [...]

17 p, 636.7 KB The evolution of cooperation / Santos, Mauro (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Genètica i de Microbiologia) ; Szathmáry, Eörs (Collegium Budapest. Institute for Advanced Study)
The gene-centred or selfish-gene approach to evolution apparently conflicts with the observation that cooperation is commonplace in human social interactions, and can also be recognized in non-human animals. [...]

It's analyzed the presence of the main three lines of Antonio Fogazzaro's ideology (spiritualism, evolutionary theory and religious modernism) in his masterpiece, Piccolo mondo antico (1895), considering the long process of composition of this novel in addition to the interest that the author dedicated at the same period to those lines, expressed in essays, lectures and letters.

Groningen Institute for Evolutionary Life) ; Bartumeus, Frederic (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Kölzsch, Andrea (Max Planck Institute for Ornithology)
One key objective of the emerging discipline of movement ecology is to link animal movement patterns to underlying biological processes, including those operating at the neurobiological level. Nonetheless, little is known about the physiological basis of animal movement patterns, and the underlying search behaviour. [...]

19 p, 517.6 KB A model-to-model analysis of Bertrand competition / Vilà, Xavier (Vilà Carnicero)
This paper studies a version of the classical Bertrand model in which consumers exhibit some strategic behavior when deciding from what seller they will buy. We use two related but different tools. Both consider a probabilistic learning (or evolutionary) mechanism, and in the two of them consumers' behavior influences the competition between the sellers. [...]

All traces of evolutionary theories had been removed from the Spanish public sphere during the late stages of the Civil War and early Francoism. Darwin's books were cleared from the shelves of libraries and bookshops and evolutionism was replaced by creationism in primary and higher education manuals. [...]
