To analyse Merrilee H. Salmon's proposal about prediction in the social sciences, several core factors are examined: 1) the delimitation of the thematic scope: contrasting the «naturalist» and «interpretationist» methodological positions and highlighting the connection with the Erklären-Verstehen duality; 2) the nexuses between explanations and predictions in the social sciences: insisting on the diversity of existing orientations on social explanation and delving into naturalist causal explanation -the option Salmon highlights- and into the possible consequences for scientific prediction; 3) the terrain of scientific prediction within the field of the social sciences: acknowledging points of convergence between Erklären-Verstehen, reflecting on the interpretationist vision of Peter Winch, and highlighting the differences between Salmon and Popper.
