20 p, 296.0 KB Local wh-subjects under Quem nunca? ellipsis / Dias, Tarcisio (University of Connecticut)
In this paper I show that there is an elliptical construction in Brazilian Portuguese involving nunca ('never') restricted to locally moved wh-subjects and provide an account of this peculiar restriction. [...]

This article revisits the classic definition of a Residual Verb Second language in light of evidence from the history of French, which is supplemented with synchronic evidence from the Romance languages. [...]

25 p, 553.8 KB Full V2, no V2, residual V2 : exploring variation through phases / Klaevik-Pettersen, Espen (University of Agder)
This paper presents a new phase-based theory of verb-second and indeed a new model of the left periphery. I argue that V-to-C movement of the verb to the phase head Fin0 has profound repercussions on clausal syntax which explains well-known differences between Modern Germanic V2 languages and Modern Romance non-V2 languages with respect to topicalisation. 22 p, 351.9 KB The Functional structure of infinitive relatives in Romance : consequences for the cartographic approach / Villalba, Xavier 1969- (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Catalana)
Relative clauses have been a major concern in syntax, semantics, acquisition, and processing studies, however, the focus has been placed, for obvious reasons, on finite prototypical cases. In this paper, we are moving to a less explored terrain, infinitive relatives, with three main goals in mind. [...]

18 p, 381.1 KB Old French Si, Syntax and Function in Diachrony / Shaw, Wyn Francis (University of Oxford)
This article offers a diachronic analysis of the Old French particle si. Using data from both verse and prose texts, I analyse the function and syntax of si from the 12th to 14th centuries. I find that si fulfills a variety of functions throughout the period, beginning as a subject continuity marker before acquiring functions as a resumptive and an expletive among others. [...]

54 p, 645.1 KB Late Latin Verb Second : the Sentential Word Order of the "Itinerarium Egeriae" / Ledgeway, Adam (University of Cambridge)
In this article we undertake a systematic study of the Itinerarium Egeriae, one of the best known late Latin texts, to determine the proper characterization of the word order of the text and to consider in particular whether the Itinerarium Egeriae can legitimately be considered to present a verb-second (V2) grammar on the par with the well-studied grammars of medieval Romance. [...]
24 p, 338.2 KB Topicalizations, left dislocations and the left-periphery / Bortolussi, Bernard (Université Paris Nanterre)
My intention in this paper is to provide as complete an overview as possible of the different types of topic phrases in Latin. After setting out the characteristics and properties of what I call Dislocations (Hanging Topics and ClLD) and Topicalizations, I go on to give a description of each morphological or syntactic device employed in Latin: prepositional DP, case marking, fronting clauses. [...]
31 p, 160.3 KB Defectivitat morfològica i variació sintàctica / Gallego, Ángel J..
35 p, 238.5 KB Recycled neuter expletive pronouns and the nature of the left periphery : ell and relatives revisited / Bartra, Anna (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Catalana)
In this paper, we revisit two types of apparently Neuter Expletive Pronouns in Romance, namely Catalan ell, Spanish ello, EP ele, a. o. , and the expletive neuter demonstratives aço, eso, esto, which have been argued in the literature to have an expressive value and to belong to the Left Periphery of the sentence. [...]

The present paper offers further independent evidence for the functional projection INT(errogative) in the left periphery of the sentence (Rizzi 2001) that is needed for an adequate analysis of interrogative clauses in Catalan and Occitan Pyrenees dialects. [...]

266 p, 750.3 KB Syntactic constraints on topicalization phenomena / Rubio Alcalá, Carlos ; Hernanz, Ma.
This dissertation is a study of the conditions under which Clitic Left Dislocation, a type of topicalization, can violate island constraints of the strong kind in different Romance languages. Under the classical characterization by Cinque (1990), Topics are described as insensitive to locality constraints of the weak kind (Wh-islands, for instance) but sensitive to islands of the strong kind (Subject Islands, Adjunct Islands and Complex-NP Islands). [...]
