The increasing influence of Atlantic Water (AW) in the Barents Sea, a process known as "Atlantification", is gradually decreasing sea ice cover in the region. Ongoing global climate warming is likely to be one of its drivers, but to further understand the role of natural variability and the biogeochemical impacts of the inflow of AW into the western Barents Sea, we reconstructed sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and primary productivity in Storfjordrenna, a climatically sensitive area south of Spitsbergen, between approximately 13,950 cal yr BP and 1300 cal yr BP. 14 p, 875.1 KB Centennial-scale variability of the British ice sheet: implications for climate forcing and Atlantic meridional overturning circulation during the last deglaciation / Knutz, Paul C. (University of Copenhagen. Geological Institute) ; Zahn, Rainer (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Hall, Ian R. (Cardiff University. School of Earth and Ocean Sciences)
Evidence from paleoclimatic archives suggests that Earth's climate experienced rapid temperature changes associated with pronounced interhemispheric asymmetry during the last glacial period. Explanations for these climate excursions have converged on nonlinear interactions between ice sheets and the ocean's thermohaline circulation, but the driving mechanism remains to be identified.
