11 p, 1.1 MB Divergent soil P accrual in ectomycorrhizal and arbuscular mycorrhizal trees : insights from a common garden experiment in subtropical China / Pingping, Lian (Fujian Normal University. School of Geographical Science) ; Xu, Linglin (Fujian Normal University. Institute of Geography) ; Yang, Liuming (Fujian Normal University. School of Geographical Science) ; Yue, Kai (Fujian Normal University. School of Geographical Science) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
Tree species establish mycorrhizal associations with both ectomycorrhizal (EM) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AM), which play crucial roles in facilitating plant phosphorus (P) acquisition. However, little attention has been given to the effects of EM and AM species on soil P dynamics and the underlying mechanisms in subtropical forests, where P availability is typically low. [...]

Agricultural ecosystems are globally important sinks of carbon and other nutrient elements. In China, acid rain events affect about 0. 62 million km², representing about 6. 4% of total land area; however, the impacts of acid rain mediated nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) depositions on soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions and nutrient stocks in paddy soils and implications for yield production under climate change are unclear. Department of Soil and Environment) ; Terrer, César (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Vicca, Sara (University of Antwerp. Department of Biology)
Nutrient availability influences virtually every aspect of an ecosystem, and is a critical modifier of ecosystem responses to global change. Although this crucial role of nutrient availability in regulating ecosystem structure and functioning has been widely acknowledged, nutrients are still often neglected in observational and experimental synthesis studies due to difficulties in comparing the nutrient status across sites. Ecological processes are centered to water availability in drylands; however, less known nutrient stoichiometry can help explain much of their structure and ecological interactions. Here we look to the foliar stoichiometry of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) of 38 dominant plant species from the Sonoran Desert, grouped in four different functional types to describe ecological characteristics and processes. The increasing success of invasive plant species in wetland areas can threaten their capacity to store carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus (C, N, and P). Here, we have investigated the relationships between the different stocks of soil organic carbon (SOC), and total C, N, and P pools in the plant-soil system from eight different wetland areas across the South-East coast of China, where the invasive tallgrass Spartina alterniflora has replaced the native tall grasses Phragmites australis and the mangrove communities, originally dominated by the native species Kandelia obovata and Avicennia marina.
