The Columbretes Islands (eastern Spain) comprise a volcanic archipelago 50 km off the eastern Spanish coast. Illa Grossa is the main island of the archipelago. After the settlement of humans during the mid-19th century, strong modifications in biodiversity took place, including the reduction of the non-flying vertebrate fauna to a single taxon, Podarcis liolepis atratus (Boscá, 1916). 18 p, 1.1 MB Early detritivory and sedimentivory in insects based on in situ gut contents from Triassic aquatic nymphs / Peñalver Mollá, Enrique (Instituto Geológico y Minero de España) ; Matamales Andreu, Rafel (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Juárez-Ruiz, Josep (Museu Balear de Ciències Naturals) ; Nel, André (Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (París, França)) ; Lozano Fernández, Rafael Pablo (Instituto Geológico y Minero de España) ; Pérez-de la Fuente, Ricardo (Oxford University Museum of Natural History)
The colonization of freshwater by insects is one of the milestones in the establishment of continental ecosystems and, thus, of life on our planet. However, several key aspects of this process such as patterns of origination, early adaptations and palaeoecological relationships of the groups involved remain poorly known, namely due to the scarcity of significant assemblages. Extrinsic and intrinsic factors impact diversity. On deep-time scales, the extrinsic impact of climate and geology are crucial, but poorly understood. Here, we use the inner ear morphology of ruminant artiodactyls to test for a deep-time correlation between a low adaptive anatomical structure and both extrinsic and intrinsic variables. [...]

17 p, 3.8 MB Early adaptations of true flies (Diptera) to moist and aquatic continental environments / Peñalver Mollá, Enrique (Instituto Geológico y Minero de España) ; Matamales Andreu, Rafel (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Nel, André (Institut de Systématique, Évolution, Biodiversité) ; Pérez-de la Fuente, Ricardo (Oxford University. Museum of Natural History)
Insect colonization of continental aquatic ecosystems and their immediate surroundings was paramount for the establishment of complex trophic nets and organic-matter recycling in those environments. True flies and other insects such as mayflies developed crucial ecological roles in early continental aquatic ecosystems, as early as the Triassic. [...]

A diverse charophyte assemblage from the Middle Miocene of the Vallès‒Penedès and Vilanova basins (Catalonia, NE Spain) is here described and illustrated for the first time. This flora has been recovered from three localities: els Casots (Subirats), Vilobí del Penedès, and Mas de l'Alonso‒el Pi Gros (Vilanova i La Geltrú). [...]

Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra) ; Delfino, Massimo (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
The two extant Salamandrina species represent a unique case of morphology, ecology, and ethology among urodeles. The range of this genus is currently limited to Italy, where it represents the only endemic vertebrate genus, but its past range extended over a much broader area of Europe, including the Iberian and Balkan peninsulas. Palaeoenvironmental information on Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) coastal Latium is sparse, mainly based on studies of isolated faunal assemblages or long pollen records from lake sediments, often of insufficient resolution to aid in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. [...]
Large herbivores are a major agent in ecosystems, influencing vegetation structure, and carbon and nutrient flows. During the last glacial period, a mammoth steppe ecosystem prevailed in the unglaciated northern lands, supporting a high diversity and density of megafaunal herbivores. [...]
