This paper provides an overview of what we take to be the key current issues in the field of Generative Grammar, the study of the human Faculty of Language. We discuss some of the insights this approach to language has produced, including substantial achievements in the understanding of basic properties of language and its interactions with interfacing systems. [...] In the present communication one-step anodization is used to prepare large arrays of self-assembled Ti(Nb,Sn) oxide nanotubes on Ti-Nb-Sn alloy. Tuneable nanoscale geometries (unimodal vs. bimodal size distribution with variable length/diameter ratios) can be controllably achieved by varying the anodization conditions, which are highly desirable for enhanced functionalities in widespread applications.

An approach to compute the polarizability tensor of magnetic nanoparticles having general ellipsoidal shape is presented. We find a surprisingly excellent quantitative agreement between calculated and experimental magneto-optical spectra measured in the polar Kerr configuration from nickel nanodisks of large size (exceeding 100 nm) with circular and elliptical shape. We report on continuously graded anisotropy. During deposition, a compositional gradient is achieved by varying the Cu concentration from Cu-rich (Fe53Pt47)70Cu30 to Cu-free Fe53Pt47. The anisotropy gradient is then realized after annealing using the composition dependence of the low-anisotropy (A1) to high-anisotropy (L10) ordering temperature. [...]

Calibration of low-temperature ac susceptometers with a copper cylinder standard
/
Chen, Du-Xing (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física) ;
Skumryev, Vassil (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Física)
A high-quality low-temperature ac susceptometer is calibrated by comparing the measured ac susceptibility of a copper cylinder with its eddy-current ac susceptibility accurately calculated. Different from conventional calibration techniques that compare the measured results with the known property of a standard sample at certain fixed temperature T, field amplitude Hm, and frequency f, to get a magnitude correction factor, here, the electromagnetic properties of the copper cylinder are unknown and are determined during the calibration of the ac susceptometer in the entire T, Hm, and f range.
