28 p, 2.3 MB More on Sibilant Devoicing in Spanish Diachrony : An Initial Phonetic Approach / Rost Bagudanch, Assumpció (Universitat de les Illes Balears) ;
The devoicing of sibilants took place in Early Modern Spanish, a phenomenon which has been considered problematic to account for due to its occurrence context (medial intervocalic position). Traditional explanations invoked Basque influence or a structural reorganization in search for a more balanced system. [...]

26 p, 972.1 KB Acoustic phonetics : Notes on the evolution of /ti,̯ ki/̯ yod contexts in Spanish / Rost Bagudanch, Assumpció (Universitat de les Illes Balears) ;
The explanation for the evolution of /ti̯ / and /ki̯ / yod contexts has been based on articulatory reasons. However, sound change has an important auditory and acoustic basis. This paper deals with two main topics: (a) it examines the confluence of the phonetic realisations of dental and velar stops in /ti̯ / and /ki̯ /, and (b) it seeks to determine whether voicing occurs after the assibilation process. 20 p, 738.8 KB A Gradient Harmonic Grammar Account of Nasals in Extended Phonological Words / Revithiadou, Anthi (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) ; Markopoulos, Giorgos (University of the Aegean)
The article aims at contributing to the long-standing research on the prosodic organization of linguistic elements and the criteria used for identifying prosodic structures. Our focus is on final coronal nasals in function words in Greek and the variability in their patterns of realization before lexical words. [...]

32 p, 862.4 KB Morph insertion and allomorphy in optimality theory / Bonet, Eulàlia (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Catalana)
The goal of this paper is to compare two different hypotheses about the insertion of morphs and allomorphy in Optimality Theory. One of them, the Morphs through Constraifits Hypothesis (MCH) claims that the phonological realization of morphemes (morphs) is introduced through language-particular constraints. [...]

28 p, 31.6 MB Spanish non-continuants at the phonology-phonetics interface / Bros, Karolina (University of Warsaw)
This paper takes a series of lenition phenomena from Gran Canarian Spanish as a point of departure to discuss the influence of phonology on the phonetics component. Based on phonetic and phonological data, it can be concluded that a blocking effect ensues between the process of coda deletion and post-vocalic voicing, giving rise to phonetic opacity. [...]

In this article the author presents some ideas about the articulatory and perceptual mechanisms that may be involved in some major phonetic changes of the Romance languages, such as the evolution of Latino groups MB, ND and MN or the voicing of intervocalic voiceless stops comparing these ideas with those submitted by other Romance linguists in the past.

62 p, 1.9 MB A Reduction and Spreading Theory of Voicing and Other Sound Effects / Mascaró, Joan, 1949- (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Catalana)
A set of different surface effects commonly found in the phonology of natural languages, voicing assimilation and final devoicing, are derived from two parameters, Reduction, the loss of phonological structure, and Spreading, the association of two unassociated nodes. [...]

(Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Anglesa i de Germanística) ; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Facultat de Filosofia i Lletres
In Catalan, all obstruents in final position are voiceless due to Final Obstruent Devoicing (FOD). However, final obstruents will adapt their voicing to the following sound. This process is called Regressive Voicing Assimilation (RVA). [...]

46 p, 1.3 MB Exploring World-Medial Regressive Voicing Assimilation in Catalan L2 Learners of English / López Prats, Claudia ; Solé Sabater, Maria Josep, dir. (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Filologia Anglesa i de Germanística) ; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Facultat de Filosofia i Lletres
In Catalan we find two processes, Regressive Voicing Assimilation (RVA) and Final Obstruent Devoicing (FOD), which are transferred to English. The aim of this paper is to study the production of alveolar fricatives /z/ and /s/ followed by a voiceless consonant, a voiced consonant, a nasal, a vowel -contexts expected to trigger RVA-, and in final position -expected to trigger FOD- in word-medial position. [...]
