20 p, 16.1 MB Contrasting particle fluxes and composition in a submarine canyon affected by natural sediment transport events and bottom trawling / Paradis, Sarah (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Arjona-Camas, Marta (Institut de Ciències del Mar) ; Goñi, Miguel (Oregon State University. College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences) ; Palanques, Albert (Institut de Ciències del Mar) ; Masqué Barri, Pere (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Puig, Pere (Institut de Ciències del Mar)
Submarine canyons are important conduits of sediment and organic matter to deep-sea environments, mainly during high-energy natural events such as storms, river floods, or dense shelf water cascading, but also due to human activities such as bottom trawling. [...]

Departament d'Enginyeria Minera, Industrial i TIC) ; Gabriel, David (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Enginyeria Química, Biològica i Ambiental)
A heterogeneous respirometer (HR) was coupled for the first time to a microelectrode monitoring system specifically designed for dissolved oxygen (DO) measuring within the biofilm. Monitoring of the oxygen concentration in the gas and liquid phases was complemented with pioneer monitoring of DO performed simultaneously and continuously at multiple biofilm depths in a linear array of eleven gold-disk electrodes of 50 µm-diameter. [...]

31 p, 736.2 KB Potassium control of plant functions : ecological and agricultural implications / Sardans i Galobart, Jordi (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Peñuelas, Josep (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
Potassium, mostly as a cation (K+), together with calcium (Ca2+) are the most abundant inorganic chemicals in plant cellular media, but they are rarely discussed. K+ is not a component of molecular or macromolecular plant structures, thus it is more difficult to link it to concrete metabolic pathways than nitrogen or phosphorus. [...]

69 p, 2.7 MB Water potential regulation, stomatal behaviour and hydraulic transport under drought : deconstructing the iso/anisohydric concept / Martínez Vilalta, Jordi, 1975- (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Garcia-Forner, Núria (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals)
In this review, we address the relationship between stomatal behaviour, water potential regulation and hydraulic transport in plants, focusing on the implications for the iso/anisohydric classification of plant drought responses at seasonal timescales. [...]

35 p, 3.0 MB Coordination of physiological traits involved in drought-induced mortality of woody plants / Mencuccini, Maurizio (University of Edinburgh. School of GeoSciences) ; Minunno, Francesco (Helsingin yliopisto. Department of Forest Science) ; Salmon, Yann (University of Edinburgh. School of GeoSciences) ; Martínez Vilalta, Jordi, 1975- (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Biologia Animal, de Biologia Vegetal i d'Ecologia) ; Teemu, Hölttä (Helsingin yliopisto. Department of Forest Science)
Accurate modelling of drought-induced mortality is challenging. A steady-state model is presented integrating xylem and phloem transport, leaf-level gas exchange and plant carbohydrate consumption during drought development. [...]

36 p, 1.2 MB A new look at water transport regulation in plants / Martínez Vilalta, Jordi, 1975- (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Biologia Animal, de Biologia Vegetal i d'Ecologia) ; Retana Alumbreros, Javier (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Biologia Animal, de Biologia Vegetal i d'Ecologia) ; Poyatos, Rafael (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Aguadé Vidal, David (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i d'Aplicacions Forestals) ; Mencuccini, Maurizio (University of Edinburgh. School ofGeoSciences)
Plant function requires effective mechanisms to regulate water transport at a variety of scales. Here, we develop a new theoretical framework describing plant responses to drying soil, based on the relationship between midday and predawn leaf water potentials. [...]

Last years, some ideas concerning plant water relations have changed. On one hand, more emphasis has been put in the study of water transport inside the xylem and, on the other, biophysical limitations related to the architecture of this pathway have been recognized. [...]
