8 p, 145.1 KB Testing the product test / Brea-Solis, Humberto (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Economia de l'Empresa) ; Lovell, C. A. Knox (University of Queensland) ; Grifell-Tatjé, Emili (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Economia de l'Empresa)
The product test asks the product of a quantity index number and a price index number to equal the corresponding value change. The literature treats the product test as being so important that it is used to identify acceptable index number pairs, and to construct implicit index numbers when an otherwise desirable pair fails the test. 30 p, 254.9 KB Productivity at the post : its drivers and its distribution / Grifell-Tatjé, Emili (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Economia de l'Empresa) ; Lovell, C. A. Knox (University of Queensland) ; University of Queensland. Centre for Efficiency and Productivity Analysis
We study the economic, financial and distributional performance of the United States Postal Service subsequent to its 1971 reorganization. We investigate the economic drivers of productivity change (technical change, change in cost efficiency, and scale economies), and the distribution of the financial benefits of productivity change (consumers of postal services, postal employees and other resource suppliers, and residual claimants). 25 p, 386.2 KB Exact relationships between fisher indexes and theoretical indexes / Grifell-Tatjé, Emili (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Economia de l'Empresa) ; Lovell, C. A. Knox (University of Queensland) ; University of Queensland. Centre for Efficiency and Productivity Analysis.
In this paper we develop exact relationships between empirical Fisher indexes and their theoretical Malmquist and Konus counterparts. We begin by using implicit Malmquist price and price recovery indexes to establish exact relationships between Malmquist quantity and productivity indexes and Fisher quantity and productivity indexes. Mining and fishing are both extractive industries, although one resource is renewable and the other is not. Miners and fishers pursue financial objectives, although their objectives may differ. In both industries financial performance is influenced by productivity and prices. [...]

11 p, 1.8 MB Decompositions of profitability change using cost functions: a comment / Grifell-Tatjé, Emili (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament d'Economia de l'Empresa) ; Lovell, C. A. Knox (University of Queensland) ; University of Queensland. Centre for Efficiency and Productivity Analysis.
Recently Diewert (2014) decomposed cost change into the product of four drivers. He then combined three of these drivers with a novel measure of returns to scale to decompose profitability change. We use an implicit Konüs input quantity index to show that his expression for profitability change is the product of a price recovery index and an implicit productivity index, and we extend his analysis by exploiting new relationships between theoretical Konüs and empirical Fisher price indexes to obtain two new decompositions of profitability change.
