The music of modernity (since the eighteenth century), was based on the tradition, mainly borrowed from poetry, of associating meanings with sounds: the music could be "understood". In contrast, the formalism of the twentieth century, through the radicalisation of certain romantic ideas, ended up depriving the listener of the tools needed to listen fully to the musical message.
