The considerable increase in geriatric centres that has come about during the last few decades is a reflection of a series of changes in our society. This article is based on Erving Goffman's proposal of an «ideal model» of holistic institution to analize residential situations, on the theses of Michel Foucault regarding the history of institutionalization, and on the work of McEwen and others, with a view to studying the social significance of the institutionalization of the aged, the degree of totality governing daily life in such centres and their social justification, contrasting with studies carried out by Myles and Miranda.
