Els espectadors de L'hort dels cirerers d'Anton Txèkhov muntat per Giorgio Strehler, primer a Milà (1974) i més tard a París, es van trobar entre dos períodes de la història de la unió d'Europa: la primera, la dècada dels 1960, anys d'intensificació de la Comunitat Econòmica Europea i de canceŀació dels aranzels, sobretot al final d'aquest període amb el canvi en el govern francès de De Gaulle al de Pompidou, i d'un problema agrícola creixent a França, a causa d'un gran excedent de producció. Audiences at Anton Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard directed by Giorgio Strehler, first in Milan (1974) and later in Paris, found themselves between two periods in the history of a united Europe: one, the 1960s, comprised the years of intensification of the European Economic Community and of the cancellation of tariffs, particularly towards the end of the period with the change in the French government from De Gaulle to Pompidou, and an increasing agricultural problem in France due to the vast surplus of produce.
