BASQUE TRANSLATION IN THE STRUCTURE OF BASQUE LITERARY HISTORIOGRAPHIES

Miren IBARLUZEA SANTISTEBAN

This paper reviews the evolving representations of translation through a perusal of eleven historiographies of Basque literature: we examine the translation figures in them and we analyze how each author has treated translation. In order to classify the discourses of the historiographers, our journey takes us through the monographs devoted to Basque literary history by Orixe (1927), Mitxelena (1960), Villasante (1961), Sarasola (1971), Mujika (1979), Juaristi (1987), Orpustan (1996), Urkizu (2000), López Gaseni (2002), Aldekoa (2004), and Olaziregi (2012). We also consider the position and function of translation in the construction of Basque literature. We reveal discourses on translated Basque literature in order to expose paths to the history of translation; indeed, the present research shows what kind of impact the field of translation can have on the space it shares with the neighbouring field of literature. We make a particular effort to answer the following question: what function does translation fulfil in the historiographical structure of Basque literature?

Pedagogic fantasies: Beatriz Sarlo and her translations for Punto de vista (1978-1984) This article reviews the translations produced by Beatriz Sarlo for Punto de vista between 1978 and 1984, and aims to account for both the critical actions within which they were framed and the intervention fantasies that triggered them.

Some notes on the history of the translation of Old Norse literature into Spanish Towards the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, various works of Old Norse literature were published in Spain in translations that were not based directly on the original. However, it was chiefly not until the 1980s that direct prose and poetic translations of emblematic woks such as Eddas and several Icelandic sagas began to be published on a more or less regular basis. The latter include a large number of those belonging to genres such as the legendary sagas (fornaldarsögur), the sagas of Icelanders (Íslendingasögur) and the chivalric sagas (riddarasögur). This article offers a diachronic overview of the Old Norse-Icelandic texts that have been translated in Spain so far, as well as their translators.

Anthony Berkeley and the types of prose in Revista Multicolor de los Sábados: the short story emerges victorious This article analyzes the procedures and strategies used in the translation of Anthony Berkeley’s novel The Poisoned Chocolate Case como cuento, under the title “El envenenador de Sir William”, in Revista Multicolor de los Sábados (1933). Some years later, the story would again be published in the anthology Los mejores cuentos policiales (1943), compiled by Borges and Bioy Casares. The translation procedures and the changes in the text are closely related, on the one hand, to promoting the short mystery story as distinct from the psychological novel and the more widely distributed detective novel; and, on the other hand, to a tradition of extremely free translations in publishing circles driven both by the culture industry and the political avant-garde. This manipulation of The Poisoned Chocolate Case gives rise to Borges’ concept of the “version”.

The historical translation of Spanish wines in the works of Shakespeare The aim of this article is to analyze the references to Spanish wines in translations of Shakespeare’s Henry IV (Parts I and II) published in Spain in the 19th and 20th centuries. Although various studies have dealt with this topic, from the pioneering work by Duque (1981) to the more recent one by Leal Cruz (2015), no chronological analysis has been carried out to provide a historical view of the translation of these references over the centuries. Similarly, no research has evaluated the translation techniques employed, or how they may have affected intercultural communication between the Elizabethan and Spanish societies. This article therefore aims to analyze the original Shakespearean texts and their translations in order to detect meaningful alterations in the translation of the wine references and to reflect on how these may have affected the readers’ understanding. Also, the analysis will propose a number of conclusions regarding the translators selected and the possibility that they may have translated “against each other” due to their personal criteria.
