Cet article présente une revue des opinions critiques contre l'Inquisition au XVIIIe siècle, sur trois fronts : les histoires de l'Inquisition, leur résonance et leur immense popularité dans les années 1700 ; les débats en faveur de la tolérance avec une référence toute particulière aux Français des Lumières ; enfin, les opinions critiques des penseurs espagnols. Il met en relief le fait que l'Inquisition espagnole est devenue l'archétype universel de l'intolérance et des préjudices qu'elle entraîne. This article reviews the critical opinions against the Inquisition in the 18th century from three standpoints: the stories concerning the Inquisition and their enormous echo and popularity in the 1700's; the debates in favour of tolerance, with particular reference to the French intellectual elite; and, finally the Spanish critical thinkers' opinions. It is clearly demonstrated that the Spanish Inquisition became a universal image of intolerance and its subsequent préjudices.
