Atmospheric deposition of iron (Fe) plays an important role in controlling oceanic primary productivity. However, the sources of Fe in the atmosphere are not well understood. In particular, the combustion sources of Fe and the subsequent deposition to the oceans have been accounted for in only few ocean biogeochemical models of the carbon cycle. [...]

La fenología de la vegetación a escala global se caracterizó a partir de series temporales del índice de área foliar (LAI) SPOT VEGETATION a 1-km de resolución espacial en el periodo 1999-2010. [...]
We characterized the phenology of the vegetation at the global scale from the mean seasonal leaf area index (LAI) estimated from 1-km SPOT VEGETATION time series for 1999-2010. The satellite-derived phenology was spatially consistent with the global distributions of climatic drivers and biome land cover. [...]

Environmental factors prevail over dispersal constraints indetermining the distribution and assembly of Trichopteraspecies in mountain lakes / Mendoza, Guillermo de (Centre d'Estudis Avançats de Blanes) ; Ventura, Marc (Centre d'Estudis Avançats de Blanes) ; Catalan, Jordi (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals)
Aiming to elucidate whether large-scale dispersal factors or environmental species sorting prevail in determining patterns of Trichoptera species composition in mountain lakes, we analyzed the distribution and assembly of the most common Trichoptera (Plectrocnemia laetabilis, Polycentropus flavomaculatus, Drusus rectus, Annitella pyrenaea, and Mystacides azurea) in the mountain lakes of the Pyrenees (Spain, France, Andorra) based on a survey of 82 lakes covering the geographical and environmental extremes of the lake district. Recent warming significantly advanced leaf onset in the northern hemisphere. This signal cannot be accurately reproduced by current models parameterized by daily mean temperature (Tmean). Here using in situ observations of leaf unfolding dates (LUDs) in Europe and the United States, we show that the interannual anomalies of LUD during 1982–2011 are triggered by daytime (Tmax) more than by nighttime temperature (Tmin). Elemental stoichiometry constitutes an inherent link between biogeochemistry and the structure and processes within food webs, and thus is at the core of ecosystem functioning. Stoichiometry allows for spanning different levels of biological organization, from cellular metabolism to ecosystem structure and nutrient cycling, and is therefore particularly useful for establishing links between different ecosystem compartments. Drought-related tree die-off episodes have been observed in all vegetated continents. Despite much research effort, however, the multiple interactions between carbon starvation, hydraulic failure and biotic agents in driving tree mortality under field conditions are still not well understood. [...]

Improved understanding of drought controls on seasonal variation in Mediterranean forest canopy CO₂ and water fluxes through combined in situ measurements and ecosystem modelling / Keenan, Trevor (Centre de Recerca Ecològica i Aplicacions Forestals) ; García, R. Water stress is a defining characteristic of Mediterranean ecosystems, and is likely to become more severe in the coming decades. Simulation models are key tools for making predictions, but our current understanding of how soil moisture controls ecosystem functioning is not sufficient to adequately constrain parameterisations.
