. ANCEL J}OTOR. 20 SEVILLE CATHEDRAL. MUSEUM Translated by Royall Tyler, Editor oj the Spanish Calendars of State Papers, Public Record Office, London, happens witn cathedrals possessing a long history, As that of Seville constitues a Museum. Edmondo de Ami cis stated that there are masterpieces of 67 sculptors and 38 painters in it, for there is hardly a nook or corner which does not contain something remarkable. We must. - therefore, begin by proclaiming it impossible to describe it, or even to allude to the multitude of works of art it contains. It may be stated that before 1908, the value of the mass of works of art in the cathedral, above all, the pictures. was ignored. It was then that celebrated Sevillan scholar Ces toso y Perez proposed to Canon Munoz y Pabon to draw up a general inventory of the paintings belonging to the church, This idea was accepted by the chapter and carried out with the good result that several pictures were discovered whose great value had not been suspected. It was at that time that the most remarkable of the paintings were placed in the more prominent places or, at least, in the best lit chapels in order to make it possible to study them. Thus the Cathedral Museum does not only include works of art placed in the Sacristia Mayor-a hall which, if we were to deal with it in any detail, would require more space than we have at our disposal=>, the Sacristia de los Calices and 21 tbe Sal a Capitular, but includes- others scattred about the - rest of the church. When the visitor enters the Sacristia Mayor- by the rena is sange entrance with its pediment and door dating from the XVI century, he sees_ one of the most beautiful parts of the church, where many "c1mirable objects await him. -Without mentioning the cupola, the first thing that strikes him is the great collection of pictures on the walls. In -the magnificent wardrobes, executed _in 1820, where the ritual ornaments are kept, two works by Murillo are shown represent ing· San Isidoro and San Leandro. According to Cean Ber mudez, the pictures are portraits of the licenciates Juan L6pez _ Talavan and Alonso de Herrera.' . At the end of the "hall. under the arch which: forms the altar, there is an adrr-irable canvas by Pedro de Campana. the.Descent from the Cross, which was painted for the parish church of Santa Cruz, destroyed by the French. It is so rernar keble that Murillo went frequently to see it, and it is related that one deythe sacristan, about to dose the c.hurch. said to him: «Master, what ·ar .. you waiting for?», upon which ,he artist replied: "I -am waiting for'them- to let down Our Saviour ». The side altars contain two other pictures represent; ing Santa Teresa and the martyrdom of San Lorenzo. Other canvasses in this room are; on the walls on the . Gospel side, the Immaculate Conception with the attributes of this mystery by Pacheco; Our Lord appearing -to San Ina. cio, by Roelas, and the angels-as young-men attributed to Este ban Marquez. The best, on the Epistele side: Saint Francis with angels playing instruments, Our Lord-- and Our Lady, signed by Juan'Sanchez Cotan, 1620, and the Virgen de las Mercedes, by Zurbaran. On the wall to the_right of the altar of the relics, there. is a San- Jer6nimo, by Ribera, one of the most interesting pictures by this Eainter. "Opposite, is Saint Sebastian, supposed to be by Giiido Reni, Near the entrance San Hermen!:'_gildo in the style of Tiepolo. Next to it, a Build ing of the Temple of Solomon, by an arronyrnus Sevillian painter; the martyrdom of St. John Baptist, by Lucas Tordan, and the Bienaventuranza, attributed to Tintoretto. In ihe rest of the Sacris_ty there are a Vhgin and Ch).ld, and a Magdalen by unknown painters; Our Lord seated at table with his dis ciples at Emmaus by Maella, and an Ecce Homo, by Tobar. On concluding our examination of these paintings.ewe must cast a glance at the sculpture which consists of a of San _F ernando, dating from the XVIII single statue century and by an unknown artist, and two figures of saints Justa and of the XVI eentury and also by an unknown hand, Rfin an prmci- 22 pally the jewels and goldsmiths' work which is mostly kept in the Treasury naxt to the Sacristia Mayor. There are two pieces of remarkably beautiful proportions, known" as" the Custodia Grande or Corpus, and the Tenebra rio. The first, so called in.order to distinguish it from other custodias owned by the cathedral, is a masterpiece of the renaissance style, made by the celebrated Juan de Arfe. who worked seven years on it. for its is recorded that the was presented in design 1580 and the work was finished in 1587, and cost 235.654 reales. The artist was aided by the scholarly canon Francisco Pacheco, who helped him with the symbolic figures. The artist himself said of this piece that it was the best 6f silversmith's work of its kind in existence. It is round in piece form, is nearly three and a half metres in height and weighs some 300 kilogrammes. It is divided into four storeys, each one of them wi(h 24 columns in two tiers, the. outer ones with adorned shafts and fine low reliefs on the pedestais, and the inner ones engraved. TJ_,e lower storey of the Ionic order has in the middle of it a statue of Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion.' and blow three allegorical figures between St. Peter and St. Paul. Seated round the basement are four larger figures representing the Doctors of the church, St. Tho mas Aquinas and- Urban IV. The second story, the base of which is surrounded by 12 angels crowning the columns of the first storey Corinthian very ornate with •. Ioliage in the frieze and in the columns which support the figures represent ing the gifts and fruits of the Holy Ghost. [n the middle, is the monstrance to hold the Host. which is adorned by four evangelists and two saints. The third and fourth stories. are of the composite order. ll'ie third having it! the middle the lamb w-ith the book of the seven seals on a throne, surrounded by the four beasts of the apocalypse. covered with the eyes; fourth storey shows the Trinity and is suniiounted by a cupo la with a statue of Faith. The Custodia was restored in 1668, thereby" losing beauty. . in . The Tenebrario. is an enormous candlestick for 15 candles, of a .rhornboidal plan with a base ornamented in the renais -sance style. The shaft rises up from this base like a mast. ornamented in the same manner, which cariies a pediment" "adorned by. 15 les and statues ;:eresenting .the Savi_our. other Evangelists. and. We now pass to the numerous jewels preserved here. There are three patriarchal crosses of great value, the chief one called the Merino Cross, because it was executed by the sirversmith Francisco de Merino in 1580. It is over 1 metre high and half a metre broad, and is carried in the most so lemn processions. The other two crosses are. called respec tively the crystal and the enamel crosses. Among the other special notice shall be taken of one made of the . crosses, first gold brought by Colomb us from America Next come .. the two monstrances: one used on the Octave of the Concep tion, and the other on Corpus Christi day, with 1,500 pearls and other gems. the Pax in gold and precious stones, of Cardinal Gonzalez de Mendoza, and two others in silver in Renaissance style. There are two more, in silver. iven by Dona A. de Paiva in 1688; a triptych reliquary called Tablas Alfonsinas; 19 reliquaries of silver gilt, some of them with fragm<;nts of the True Cross, among which one is recorded by documents in the cathedral archives to have come from the tomb of the Emperor Constantine. These documents sta- te that the Empress Helena had a small cross made out of the True Cross on which Our Lord died, and told her son to wear it round his neck. When Constantine died, the cross was buried with his body. When Constantinople was taken by the Turks, his sepulchre was profaned, but the Ponti fical legate succeeded in buying that relic and presented it to the Pope, who made a present of it to John II King of Spain who, in his turn, gave it to Alonso de Fonseca. Alon- '1 so de Fonseca, doubting that it belonged to the True Cross, caused a fire to be lit in the Coro and cast the "cross into it; whereupon, far from being consumed, it emitted an agreable perfume and remained uninjured. It has belonged to the Chapter since' 1482. We next notice a cross and cand lesticks commonly known as the "Alfons os» ; other candlesticks called the Gigantes or Giants, and finally the celebrated keys which tradition says were offered to San Fernando by Axataf, when the city was taken. These keys are two; the lar- ger one excellently Forged in iron in the Almohade style, I as . an inscription alluding to the city gates; .the other, made of s\lver in ,the Mudejar style seems to have belonged to the Jews who lived in Seville. It has lwo similar inscriptions, one in Hebrew inside the ring, and the other in monkish lettering. We must not without mentioning the great collection pass of other sacred vestll\Snts pluvial copes; stoles, albs, and embroidered in gold, silver and silks and adorned with lace. There is a4S0 the historical banner with which King Fernando III entered Seville, and which is still taken out on !ireat occasions: a banner consisting of a square of taf teta, a piece of which is missing. It has been so much men ded that all that remains of the original banner is a purple lion in the upper part, on a white ground bordered with yellow. Next, the tourist enters the celebrated Sacristia de los Ca lices, (entered through the Dolores chapel), which is a gothic construction of admirable and one of the richest parts design, of the cathedral in point of works of art. In a niche close to the door is a celebrated crucifix by Montafiee, an astonishing work of art which was brought here from the Chartreuse of Seville, to which it had been given by Archdeacon Mateo Vazquez de Leca, Gestoso states that it is beyond all praise, and another contemporary critic says of it: «this marble figure, cut in planes with so sure a hand, is the best crucufix in Spain, and perhaps in the world: a masterpiece hich amazes and delights in which Christian idealism and the most Iberian realism are combined with magnificent mastery. It is impossible anywhere to find so formidable a piece of work and such straightforward techni- que, such profound Christian sentiment». . This Sacristy contains a large number of valuable pain tings. We will only sum them up here. Beginning on the left end wall we find, among others, the following: «Our Lord and St. Peter», one of the two excellent works by Alonso Cano which the cathedral owns; «San Isidore receiving the Pallium», which is believed to be by Valdes Leal; a Nati vity, by Antolinez; two subjects from the life of St. Pedro 'Nclesco attributed by some to Zurbaran and by others to Alonso Vasquez; «St. Peter in Pontifical ornaments», by Alejo Fernandez; «Gideon's \Varriors, by Titians : «The Guardian Angel», by Guercino; the «Conception», by Pache co; «The Almighty with the dead Christ», by Tristan; Our Lady of the Rosary, by Zurbaran; a «Piedad», by Van der Weyden; «50r Francisca Dorothea», by Murillo; a «Dead Saint and Beggars», by Ribera; a painting of the "Venerable Fernando Contreras» by Luis de Vargas; «Saints Justa and Rufina», by Goya; «Ecce Homo», the «Virgin and St. john», a triptych by Morales; «God the Father with the body of Our Lord», also called The Trinity, by El Greco; the «[nmacu late Conception» with a portrait of Miguel el Cid, by Pa checo; «Our Lady embracing the body of Our Lord», by an anonymous painter of the XVI century; «Our Lord on the Cross», by Zurbaran, and the «Holy F amily», by Murillo. We now enter the Sala Capitular or Chapter-house, of 5 whose architectural splendour we gave some slight idea in the preceding volume of this collection. In the place of ho nour, over the Archbishop's throne, is a painting by- Pa checo representing San Fernando, with an inscription in latin, Opposite, over the entrance, is a portrait of the In fante Cardinal don Luis of Bourbon. The vault is decorated bQ eight me8allions with paintings by Murillo, among which the central one, representing the lnmaculate Concep tim}, is known all over the world by innumerable reproduc tions. Cean Bermudez said of it that the Sevillan painter here poured out all his knowledge, grace and good taste, as well in the flesh tones as in the delicacy of other colours. Among the other paintings by Murillo, we should mention, on the right of the «Conception», "San Herrnenegildo», "San Leandro», eSan Lareano», and «Santa Rufina», All of them arc life-sized and, wih the exceplion of the Conception, they arc represented full-length. They are accompanied by an gels. In the Baptistry is painting by Murillo representing San a Antonio de Padua holding out his hand' to the Infant who descends from Heaven, amid angels and clouds. Of this Jesus picture, Gautier "aid: «He who has not seen this San An tonio does net know the last word of painring in Seville». This picture was criminally mutilated. On the 15th of No vember 1"874, the head of the Saint was cut out of it, was afterwards though ;[ happily recovered, and the picture restored. In the Escalas chapel is' a «Piedad», by Llano Valdes, and, as we said in the last volume, a beautiful relief of Nues tra Sefiora de la Granadl> by Andrea de la Robbia, a mas terpiece of the technique of terra-cotta enamelled in va - rious colours; which was immorfalized by the great Italian . sculptor. It represents Our Lady about to be crowned by two cherubs, accompanied by Saint Francis of Assissi, Santo Do mingo, San- Sebastian and Santa Isabel, as well as other fi gures. This excellent work of art rem,,';nerl hidrl"n in th' crypt of the Sagrario from the middle of the XVII century until the year 1904, when it was very rightly put in its present place. In the Santiago chapel, there is a precious painting representing Santiago (St. James the Great_er) at the Battle of Clavijo, by Roellas, (1909). The altar of Our Lady of Bethlehem, at the end of the right transept, shows a fine picture of the Virgin by Alfonso Cano. To the right, on the Assumption altar, there is another fine picture of the Vir gin by Maratta. Over the door leading into the orange court, there is another large picture by Murillo. In the cisco chapel is a large picture of great merit San fran by the .younger 26 Herrera in wp.ich the Saint appears in glory. In the San Pedro chapel there number of -magmficent pictures by are a Zurbaran, representing scenes from the lite of this saint. I'hree good pictures may be seen in the Sacristy or the Ca pilla Real; a Mater Doiorosa and a San l: ernando by ivru rillo, and a San Ignacio and San Francisco Xavier by Pa checo. In the little u..mba chapel is the tamous picture by / Luis de v argas representing the ascension or Llur Lord. The !;jan Jose cnapelvnae the betrothal ou Uur Lady by Valdes Leal. Un -the attar or the little chapel or tne Nativity, there is another of Luis de Vargas' best paintings, representing the Adoration or the.Shephers, On the altar called alter the uuar dian Angel, there is another picture by Murillo, which counts among. his best works. In the smaller chapel or the Con ception, to the right or .the Coro, there are a number or in teresting pictures by rvlontanes, such as the three images or the Inmaculate Conception, St. Jonn Baptist, and St. Fabian. In order to complete our review of'the paintings, sculptures and goldsmith's work which contitute the cathedral museum properly speaking, we must make some reference to the co llection at psalters and to the J:Iiblioteca Colombina. Seville cathedral contains a 'very tine collections or psaiters, going back to the XV century. "1 he principal varieties of tnis blanch ot art, in which the excellence or the scribes and iiluminators is more tillly recognized as time passes, are re presented _here. There isrthe Italian School with the influen ce 'of the great masters iotto and i:'erugino; the Flemish School; the lVludejar school of strongly Spanish character; and the Henaissance school Which ended up by being genui nely Sevilliaii. The cathedral archives preserve the names of the most remarkable of these artists: Francisco Sanchez, Ni colas Gomez, Diego Fernandez de. los Pilares, Alonso de V aldes, Nuno Garcia, Pedro Comitres and inany more. As for the Biblioteca Colombina, it is well known - that it is by itself one, of the most remarkable libraries in Se ville and indeed in all Spain; the universal fame of which was known centuries ago. It 'is installed in magnificent rooms over the Lagarto aisle, on the East side of the .orange court or Patio de los Naranjos, I.t was founded by the learned -son of the glorious discoverer of America, don Fernando' Colon, in his' own house; and was left, on his death in 1539, to the cathedral chapter. At the beginning, it was composed of the twenty volumes collected by, the donor, and it was rapi dly. increased by other gifts which have continued until at present it 'contains 33.000 volumes. It contains so many su perb codices, incunabula, manuscripts and. aid bcoks, pljnted 27 impossible that it is to think of giving here even the most- We will only say that there are to - rapid description of it. be found the Bible of Pedro de Pamplona, the Bible of Cardinal Mendoza, a number of books of hours on parchment with iluminated margins, some of which beloned to Isabel the Catholic, as weI! as literary and historical jewels such as the Pontifical Codices of Charles the Noble and dona Leonor de Castilla, the Imago Mundi, which Chr-istopher Co lumbus studied, and which shows marginal' notes added by him, and many other ancient scientific books, manuscripts by Colomb us himself, indices made by his son, the founder of the library, ect. The Bibliofeca Colomb ina also contains a collection of other Sevillian per portraits of the prelates of Seville, and of a great portrait of the sonages; a San Fernando by Murillo, discoverer of America, and a magnificent sword which is believed to date from the XVII century, although tradition, doubtless wrongly, would have it that it once belonged to the Castilian hero F ernan Gonzalez, and, afterwards, to Gar ci-Perez de Vargas.
