II a subi quelques alterations. Ilest carre, decore d'ornements . emprun- tes a l'art arabe marined'art chretien. ANSELMO GSc6N DE GOTOR 20 SARAGOSSA IiI Translated by Royall Tyler, -Editor of the Spanish Calendars of State Papers , Public Record Office, London. the first of these brief stud ies of the artistic mon uments IN of the Aragonese capital we gave the space they deserve to the two cathedrals of Saragossa. We will now complete our taskin this second volume. THE CHURCH OF SANTA ENGRACIA.-Hasalarge alabaster porch of the plateresque style 'which is the first example of renaissance work in Saragossa. The first part was finished in1504 and the second in IS I 9, and the whole cost 800 crowns. It has been supposed that it is the work of Juan and Diego Morlanes y Ferment, but there is no documentary support for this attribution-. The porch has the general appearance of a retablo or rere dos and is flanked by bases with colums of the composite order. The niches in the facade contain sculptures represen ting the Doctors of the Church, and a door leading into the interior was divided !>y a column which carried a statue of the patron saint. The upper part is broken up into niches; the central one contains scenes of the Passion, and on either side are the Ca tholic Kings (Ferdinand and Isabella) kneeling before their patron saints. The triangular pediment has disappeared. It was decoraClte with scrolls and enamelled tiles. The facade has been altered several times. The original one was of the Mudejar style, and the entrance doors were under the belfries, The most recent restoration was discreetly carried out by the sculptor Palao. In th e catacombs, since the disturbances of 1808, have been preserved two sculptured tombs of the llIrd and IVth centuries. On the sarcophagus of the among other Martyrs, biblicalepisodes, the glorious mystery of the Ascension is represented, the earliest representation known of this event. THE PARISH CHURCH OF SAN PABLO. Like the - churches of San em, the Magdalena, and San Pedro, San Pablo belongs to the XIVth century. This church preserves a more or less mutilated Mudejar belfry, and, besides its nave and aisles it also has an door artistically decorated, though defaced, opening into the main nave. The tower is octagonal in plan, very lofty and elegant, an effect which it owes to the fact that it becomes narrower in the upper stages. It is unadorned except in the uppermost storey, where there are meanders, blind arcades, pointed arches with twin openings containing bells, geometrical designs of various size and a saw-tooth moulding. This early building has had added onto it an open arcaded storey with a conical spire. The main door of the church dates. from 1587. The masonry and the steps were the work of Juanes de Villabona and Martin de Recondo, and the doors are by Ant6n de Prado. Like the two cathedrals, this parish church possesses two silver altars, rich frontal, a fine processional custodia, a sil a ver bust of San BIas, an entombment by Juanes de Chando dated 1606, and the only known collection of the complete Apostles tapestries executed after the cartoons of Raphael of Urbi no, The main reredos is by the great sculptor Ferment, as is proved byacontract drawn up on the loth December, 1511, by the notary public Pedro Serrano. It is of wood, polychro- 22 med, and shows traces of Gothic influence in the upper cano pies. The reliefs and the large statue of the titular saint stan ding under a shell-shaped arch are of the renaissance style. The central part of this retablo is broken up into 3 bands. The first and second have two sculptured scenes on either side and in the middle is a niche containing the statue of the patron saint. When, in the XVIIIth century, the retablowas restored, a circular opening was made just over this niche. All the sculptured scenes are covered by canopies and the whole reta blo is set inside a very decorative carved frame. The retablo also contains an interesting painting of the Blessed Virgin dating from the middle of the XVI th century. In the lower part of the great retablo there is another small one by the sculptor, formerly dedicated to San Bartolome same (according Notary's documents it was called the Corpus to the retablo), and is now dedicated to the Virgin of the Pillar. The choir is closed by a very pretty forged iron screen crowned by crockets. There is also a chapel known as the Capilla del Opispo, which was built in honour of James the Greater) Santiago (St. and finished in 1601. It owes its name to the presence of the .renaissance tomb of a Bishop of Huesca: Don Diego Monreal. Several valuable retablos have disappeared, such as the one of the early Virgin and those dedicated to San Martin, Santo Sepulcro, Espiritu Santo, San Joaquin, Ecce Home, etc. PARISH CHURCH OF SAN GIL. The belfry belongs - to the second half of the XIVth century, and is square ana profusely decorated with interlacing geometrical designs and arcading. Its twin openings have been blocked up and all the coloured tiles have vanished. The chief retablo is attributed to Miguel de Ancheta and is of gilt wood with reliefs and statues. It is composed of a base, a main storey and an upper storey, and contains the image of the titular saint. The remarkable silver bust of San Andres preserved in this church was made by the silversmith Francisco de Tapias. 23 PARISH CHURCH OF THE MAGDALENA. - This church has preserved its airy of square plan, which is tower Mudejar work of the XIVth century, like the vaulting of the single nave. The decoration of the tower is rich in enamelled tiles of star shapeand round. When the sun touches them, it produces brilliant and harmonious colours. There are also most effective motives formed by bricks: meanders, saw-tooth, cassettes, trefoil arches and pointed or round arcading. The original apse has been converted into the main entran ce, and nothing but fragments remains of the works by For ment, Tudelilla, Morlanes and Salazar which once existed here. The modern facade of the church contains a statue of St. Mary Magdalen of artistic worth though of unknown authorship. The original chief retablo was carved by Juan de Salazar, an artist of great merit, and it contained a tableau painted by Pedro de Aponte. This retablo was replaced by another by Damian Forment, some wooden reliefs from which were re·· moved to the Santo Cristo chapel in the X VIlt th century. The retablo was taken down in order to make room for one of the baroq ue style. The Santo Cristo chapel which occupies the space where the main entrance into the church just by the formerly was, tower and opening out into the calle MayoT, is now an uncon sidered chapel. The retablo by Ferment, which bas been re moved to this chapel, contains scenes of the Crucifixion, Our Lady, St. John and the Magdalen. It is obvious that these sculptures are nOI finished, and indeed hardly more than rough-hewn. As they were intended for the upper part of the retablo it was not necessary to finish them in detail, for the spectators' eye would have completed the effect and reduced the scale. It would be unfair to this work to mention it without this remark. The sculptor used the same model for the St. John' here as for the St. John in the church of the Pilar. However, he did not give his genius free rein in these figures as he did in his creations_in the Pilar. 24 PARISH CHURCH OF SAN MIGUEL. This church is - of the XVIth century. It has a beautiful Mudejar belfry and a statue in the porch by Mesa. The chief retablo was executed in the Florentine Forment with the help of Joly. style by The 'belfry has modern top and a modern set of bells a which with the accompanying ironwork were made in Aragon. It has suffered from restorations. The tower is square and has decorations in which the Moorish and the Christian styles are mingled. The apse has been restored and the porch is baroque. The most remarkable part of the building is the apse. The main retablo has been studied, and recent researches in the archives of Saragossa have yielded information both positive and negative relevant to it. The documents discovered confirm the theory which I put forward for the first time that Joly had a hand in the magnifi centretablo of San Miguel de los Navarros. The two sculptors towhom this retablo is due are therefore Joly and Ferment, and here the Frenchman showed himself superior to the Va lencian, who, in truth must it be said, did not reach as high a level here as he did in the .retablo in the church of the Pilar. There it was that he made himself known in Aragon; and his later work did not increase his glory, at any rate as far as it is possible to judge from what survives today. The decorative carving is attributed to one Moreto, known as the Florentine, . who worked several retablos here. on This retablo is composed in the following manner: the base has two. registers, the lower of small importance and the npper containing 6 high reliefs with scenes from the Passion, and, in the centre a baroque circular opening. Above this come three perpendicular tiers the outer ones of which are divided into two compartments containing high reliefs, and the middle one is occupied by a statue of the patron saint. The third storey contains three groups, and the fourth storey, scenes from the Old Testament, the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise, and the crossing of the Red Sex. The whole surmounted by the Crucifix, the Virgin composition,is and St. John under a triangular pediment carried by pilasters 25 with statues fixed to them. In the pediment there is a coat 01 arms. The compartments are supported by pilasters with statues - and decorative friezes constituting an entablature. San Mi guel's niche is shell-shaped and is adorned by a festoon which' takes the place of the crockets familiar to Gothic art. All the scenes are a frame which springs from a figure surrounded by or a bracket; the of this frame is in rather low relief. carving The altar frontal is decorated in the Mudejar style, like the belfry, though the latter is as late as the XVth century in the lower part, and the upper was added in the XVIth. The altar retablo is good. work by Ferment, except .for the image of the patron saint which is by Gabriel Joly. PARISH CHURCH OF SAN FELIPE AND SANTIAGO. The main retablo of this church gave place in the XVIIth century to the present baldachino. The authors of the old retablo, the contract for which was dated 1525, were Juan Picart and Juanelo Moreto, and an Ecce Homo is all that remains of it. The above mentioned churches and others offer a number of which we have not dealt with because interesting objecte they are outside the scope of this work. PALACES. - Many, and among them the best, have dis appeared. The following still survive: The Luna Palace now shelters a law court. It is interesting on account of its porch and monumental facade, which was recently the object of a- successful restoration. The Palace, that once belonged to D. Pedro de Luna, Count of Morata, bas a porch with sculpture by Guillaume Br imbez (1552). In spite of the alterations from wich it has suffered, this old Luna Palace attracts attention on account of its monumental facade flanked by turrets. The pediment of the porch is triangular and formerly bad two reclining figures. Later, two giants bearing tree-trunk maces, symbolising strength, were placed. on this facade. The Argillo Palace in the Plaza San Felipe has some magni ficent and huge carved wooden eaves. The spaces between the beams have hanging carved ornaments which serve as a sort of support for the cornice. In the lower zone, there is a frieze of carved foliage with fanciful volutes and hanging roses. This magnificent example of carpentry rises from a base imitating brackets, and a horizontal row of trefoil decoration. The whole is a monumental work and gives a foretaste of the' Italian baroque. The Lonja or great hall has 4 large external facades, and at the four corners turrets rise above the roof level. The protru ding eaves are beautifully carved, and underneath them, there are twin windows enclosed in arcades adorned with meda llions of human heads in high relief. The lower storey is pier ced with three windows in each wall and lower still there is a belt of cassettes and other mouldings. On the ground floor, there are round headed entrance doors and, right and left of them, large windows. These openings have doors with metal plates and adorned with fine forged iron decorative nails. The interior is divided into a nave and aisles by robust columns with Ionic capitals adorned with figures of children and shields bearing the heraldic lion of the city. From these capitals spring the ribs which are the architectural feature of the roof, and which have carved and gilt keystones. An inscription pre served in the building gives the date 1551 as the year in which the Lonja was finished. At the end of this building. there is a rather low arched door with pilasters and an architrave decorated with children, beads, caryatids and other classical motives, in the blocked up opening of which there was once a painted retablo. The Pardo Palace, now known the Bobadilla also as Palace, deserves to be mentioned. It is opposite the church of Santa Cruz and has preserved a court yead, now restored, but has lost its magnificent forged iron ornaments. Then there is the Mcrlanes Palace, opposite San Carlos, with plateresque win dows one of which bears the date 1555. All these buildings are of the XVIth century. The archepiscopal Palace is earlier. It contains nothing but a retablo of the XVth century on the ground floor. It was embellished in the X nth century and had a saloon with a carved and gilt ceiling (artesonado) which may have been bidden bra flat ceiling. In this hall there is a collec tion of portraits of archbishops from the XVlth century on. The one of Archbishop Company was painted by Goya in r 798. In the Yellow Room there are two panels of the XVth century. The Aljaferia Palace was once an Arab building. It preser vesof the primitive fabric nothing but its mutilated chapel. The Mudejar artesonado ceilings are of the XVth century, and the main staircase is unrivalled. There is aline modern Provincial Museum, in a XV1th cen tury Saragossan building by Magdalena, containing a collec tion of arches, capitals and tracery of the Xlth century from the Aljaferia. Moreover, there are collections of Iberian pottery, statues, busts and Roman slabs, Gothic arches and stalls. Then there is a room full of very interesting painted panels and other productions of the Aragonese school. Most remarkable of all is the Goya room in which, among other works, are the celebrated portraits of King Ferdinand VII, and the Duke of San Carlos. Together with the Goyas in the church of the Pilar, these constitute a very fine collection of the work of the artist, who was born in the Aragonese village of Fuendetodos, and whose drawing, technique, brilliant colour and vigorous execution are universally admired, and whose modest birth place I discovered.
