Abstract: Following Peter Whittaker's inspiring workshops at the 2008 conference and his article in the Summer edition ("Going to the Movies: Visual Sociology" SST 38/3), Social Science Teacher is offering an occasional series of pieces exploring the ways in which films, TV programmes, music and other products of popular culture can be used to develop students' sociological understanding. Here, we consider Peter Mullan's 2002 British film The Magdalene Sisters as a valuable enhancement to the teaching of the sociology of religion. We also provide some photocopiable resources related to the film.
