The slogan "publish or perish" reflects the great pressure scholars nowadays have to face to succeed in their academic careers. However, the pressure does not only consist of making their research results available to other scholars through academic publishing, but even more so to publish in journals that are considered to be the highest quality according to their relative ranking in "international" impact indexes. Lately, the pressure has increased even more through the OA mandates, since the target containers should satisfy this double condition, i. e. , to be open access high impact journals, which narrows down scholars' possibilities. Another aspect that we need to be aware of is that most TS open access journals are mainly edited by independent academics working in professional associations or university departments or presses. Therefore, they are supported by public or philanthropic money, which means that most of them can only afford, in terms of money and human resources, issuing one or maximum two volumes per year, which produces a bottleneck effect on open access prestigious journals. The need for new venues to absorb the growing demand has given birth to both new journals and old commercial ones changing their business models to make them compatible with OA requirements mandated by funders. The consequence is that authors are now offered to pay APCs if they want their papers to be gold OA. A collateral effect of this emerging business model we need to be aware of is the irruption of the so-called predatory journals. All the above-mentioned factors have resulted in a plethora of available journals in some disciplines, such as Translation Studies, whose scholars are not only stressed by the need to publish to advance in their academic careers, but are also overwhelmed by the enormous amount of information they have to manage as far as journals is concerned. In order to help scholars choose the most suitable journal to succeed in external research assessment exercises, on the one hand, and promote the visibility of OA TS journals, on the other, a team made of UAB's librarians and scholars designed in 2013 and keeps on regularly improving, an OA platform devoted to TS journals. The platform is trilingual (Catalan, Spanish and English) and offers all sorts of information about nearly 300 journals, such as their scope, languages of publication, indexing, copyright and self-archiving policies, author guideless and access to full text when available. The aim of our presentation is two-fold. On the one hand, we will briefly explain the platform's main features and how it can be used by researchers when looking for a suitable journal to publish their research results. On the other hand, we will offer an overview of the situation of TS journals as far as open access, visibility and impact is concerned. The results will show that the current offer cannot satisfy the demand in terms of impact and universal access simultaneously. |
