Resum: | Brassinosteroids (BRs) are steroid hormones that play crucial roles in plant growth, development and adaptation to shifting environmental conditions. Our current understanding of the origin, evolution and functional significance of BRs is influenced by a double-edged bias: most we know stems from studies on a single species and, on the flip side, dearth of information from a phylogenetically broad and significant array of land plants precludes well-grounded comparisons. Here, we provide an update on BR presence and sensing along land plant evolution. Furthermore, a comprehensive search in all major plant lineages reveals the widespread presence of BR-receptor related sequences, suggesting that steroid-related signals may have been functional early in the evolution of land plants. |
