The linguistic-historical evolution of the Italian community has been well described in its general lines and fundamental mechanisms. In the last decades the process of linguistic unification in Italy has been strengthened; which is confirmed by data on the diffusion of italophony and the regression of exclusive dialectophony. In relation to this De Mauro has sustained that, nowadays, in the Italian community about 34% of the population only speaks Italian, 23% usually speaks only one of the dialects, while the majority uses Italian for speaking and most especially for writing, while at the same time adopting one dialect for speaking. Sociolinguistic studies the tendency towards the consolidation of a standard Italian in which new features become established while others disappear. In particular, characteristics originally inherent in speech seem to have been strengthening in writing. The publishing of LIP (Lessico di Frequenza dell'Italiano Parlato) appears to be an interesting document and a valid tool of research to better follow the processes mentioned above and investigate thoroughly the status of the spoken language. This work represents a first attempts to draw the attention of linguistic pedagogy on some mechanisms in contemporary Italian, as they can be defined or redefined in view of the information provided by the LIP corpus and of the problems related to it. |
