Resum:	Las razones para acometer el estudio de la lengua de la ciencia en el período que va desde finales del siglo XIX hasta la época de la transición democrática en España son diversas. Se parte de la concepción que se tenía de la historia de la lengua entre los siglos XVIII y XIX, se concreta en el caso de la historia de la lengua de la ciencia y de la técnica, y se profundiza en el conocimiento existente acerca de este objeto de estudio en el siglo XX. A partir de aquí, se plantea el concepto de lengua de especialidad y su aplicación en el período estudiado, y se establecen las cuatro etapas en que se segmenta, con los aspectos más importantes que hay que tener en cuenta en su estudio.
Resum:	The reasons for undertaking the study of the scientific language in the period ranging from the end of the 19th century to the time of the democratic transition in Spain are diverse. The starting point is the conception of the history of the language between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, specifically in the case of the history of the language of science and technology, and deepening the existing knowledge about this object of study in the twentieth century. From this point onward, the concept of specialized language and its application in the studied time period is analysed, and the four stages in which it is segmented are established, with the most important aspects to be taken into account in its study.
