This chapter in the Routledge Handbook of Degrowth (2025) explores the unfolding of a specific approach towards degrowth in Catalunya over the past two decades, primarily through English-language scholarship from researchers and activists linked to Research & Degrowth International and the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The Catalan territory has become a hub for international degrowth activism and research, greatly influencing global degrowth debates. The chapter highlights the connections and gaps between the academic and activist elements of the degrowth movement in Catalunya, stressing the need for deeper engagement with local struggles and radical heritage. It argues for the potential of this Catalan way towards degrowth to enhance its relevance and impact by integrating insights from key radical socio-ecological traditions in Catalunya such as eco-Marxism, territorial defence struggles, and the heritage of anarcho-syndicalist economic democracy. The chapter concludes by emphasising the relevance of integrating local socio-ecological traditions with global perspectives to develop contextually grounded strategies that advance transformative systemic change and address the intertwined crises of capitalism and ecological collapse. |
