Resum: Cultural participation is tightly linked to cultural capital and the enduring reproduction of inequality. People from privileged backgrounds have distinctive ways of participating in culture and participate more actively than their less privileged counterparts. Moreover, empirical evidence suggests that the cultural participation patterns among high-standing groups exhibit distinctive features in terms of openness and tolerance. However, empirical studies on the link between cultural practices and openness and tolerance have mainly focused on specific national contexts and primarily relied on quantitative data. Additionally, openness and tolerance come in different forms that survey data, generally, cannot fully capture. To address these gaps, this chapter draws on 103 in-depth interviews with individuals from various social backgrounds in Croatia, Finland, the Netherlands, and Spain to shed light on the complex relationship between cultural participation and openness and tolerance. The authors argue that openness and tolerance defy simple categorisation into a single category. Instead, their analysis uncovers three ways in which cultural participation intersects with attitudes reflecting openness and tolerance, which they label cultural openness, political openness, and resisting openness.
