Resum:	In their colonial endeavours, the ancient Greeks encountered a huge variety of populations along the coasts of the Mediterranean and the Black Sea: some of them responded in a peaceful and friendly fashion to the arrival of newcomers, others were reluctant to receive foreigners and used violence against them. Interactions were of course much more complex, and the relations that developed between the communities were not necessarily consistent over time and space or throughout the different social strata. As most of our sources do, scholarship has largely focused on the Greek perspective. The present chapter approaches our Greek sources in an attempt to gain a better understanding of the perspectives of the locals and the motivations that guided their actions. The presence of the Greeks offered many new opportunities to them, though always combined with challenges and sometimes even threats. Many members of the local elites were inclined to cooperate with the settlers or at least to take over some of their cultural elements. There is more evidence for resentment against the Greeks among the common people. Repeatedly, conflicts escalated only with some delay after the initial settlement, perhaps because Greek intrusion often resulted in gradually destabilizing the social and political relations within neighbouring communities or among neighbouring tribes. The examples are drawn from the archaic and classical periods. They cover the appropriation of territory, trading with natural resources including slaves and produce as well as the transfer of cultural and cultic elements. Discussions will emphasize the attested or presumed perception of such actions on the local population.
