Publicación: Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2024
Resumen: The project will be working with spatial data represented both as vector and raster data. Vector data, stored in shapefile (. shp) and geojson (. geojson) file format is used to represent Roman, Medieval, and Ottoman roads. Raster data, stored as Tag Image File Format (. tif) is used to represent continuous surface data (friction surfaces, cost surfaces). Additional data (analyses outputs, network datasets) will be stored in tabular format (. csv and . xlsx files). Initial data will be re-used from the Itiner-e: A Gazetteer of Ancient Roads dataset. New data will be generated through analysis of the initial dataset. Additional new data will be collected through digitization of previously published material (journals, monographs, physical maps). All data will be used to meet the project objectives and for the purpose of presentation and dissemination of the project results in peer-reviewed publication and in an online database. Initial road dataset re-used from the Itiner-e database will be analysed to generate new measurements to meet the Research objective 1. New data thus generated will will be used to generate new Roman road dataset (Research objective 2). Data on the Medieval and Ottoman road system in the Levant will be digitized to generate new digital dataset of Medieval and Ottoman roads (Research objective 3). Further data will be generated through analysis and evaluation of the Roman, Medieval, and Ottoman road datasets (Research objective 4). Measurements and analysis stemming from Research objective 1 will be stored as a spatial data in a polyline vector shapefile (. shp) file format. Road datasets (Research objectives 1, 2, and 3) will be stored as a spatial data in a polyline vector shapefile (. shp) and . geojson file format, which can be manipulated in any GIS (Geographic Information System) software. Network dataset based on the road datasets (Research objectives 2 and 3) will be generated and stored as comma separated value (. csv) and as a spreadsheet (. xlsx) format. Results of the analyses of the road datasets (Research objective 4) will be stored as spatial data in vector files (. shp), raster files (. tif. ), and as comma separated values (. csv). Graphics and graphs, based on the results of Research objectives 1-4, will be generated in . png and . tif format. The Roman road data re-used for the purpose of Research objective 1 and 2 originates from the Itiner-e: The Atlas of Ancient Roads database, released under CC BY-NC-SA 4. 0 licence, © 2024 by Brughmans, De Soto, Pažout and Bjerregaard Vahlstrup. All remaining data will be collected, digitized, and generated through the efforts of the project. The expected size of the data is less than 50 MB for the vector, comma separated value, and less than 10 GB for all raster files. The generated data and code will be suitable for further re-use by other researchers focusing on following topics: Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern mobility, transport networks, social and economic history, spatial analysis in archaeology, archaeological theory and method. The data will be shared and can be re-used within and beyond the institution.
