This thesis examines the correlation between spatial organization and the deterioration of homosocial bonds in Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar (1963). It argues how the decay of homosocial bonds in the novel constitutes a central yet unexplored dimension of Plath’s work. Drawing on feminist literary criticism, spatial theory and the historical sociology of female friendship, this study asserts how the main two spaces of the novel function as ideologically charged environments which consequently shape homosocial relationships and how Esther’s mental decay is inseparable from both these spatial and relational contexts. The thesis resolves that The Bell Jar presents a structural critique of the spatial and social dynamics of postwar America, portraying Esther’s breakdown not as an individual issue but as a historically and politically conditioned inevitability. |
