Javier Milei's victory in Argentina in October 2023 was presented as a turning point in this South Amer-ican country's political history and in world history. For the first time, a leader who called himself an anarcho-capitalist reached the seat of government and held the reins of state, a paradoxical feat. While Milei's "anarcho-capitalism" was seen as a disruptive new development compared to the neoliberalism that has prevailed since the 1970s, in reality it is part of the evolving logic of capitalism's functioning, albeit in an exacerbated way, and, in fact, in the first few years of his term of office there have been similarities between Milei's government and the preceding neoliberal governments. This article examines the specific factors that enabled Milei to reach office within a global reactionary wave, with Argentina at the forefront of a new political phase in which capitalism seems bent, yet again, on sacrificing liberal democracy. |
