At the beginning of the seventeenth century, Don Gonzalo Méndez de Cancio y Donlebún returned to his homeland, Asturias, after fulfilling his duties as the seventh Governor and Captain General of Florida. Three wooden chests full of maize kernels were brought with him to be planted on his lands in Casariego. From this small coastal council in western Asturias, its cultivation was rapidly spread throughout the Principality, relieving the hunger of a population that had suffered numerous subsistence crises and the plague of the late sixteenth century. In the following decades, not only did the rural population recover rapidly, but their culture and the physiognomy of the landscape changed, in a process of adaptation of the cereal to a totally different worldview from the one it was embedded in on the other side of the Atlantic. A process that illustrates the multidimensionality of human nature and experience, which can only be addressed by building bridges between the different academic disciplines, a task that is also essential to successfully face the great eco-social challenges of this century. s'ha produit una excepcio. |
