7 p, 1.0 MB Revealing the improved stability of amorphous boron-nitride upon carbon doping / Kaya, Onurcan (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Colombo, Luigi (The University of Texas at Dallas. Department of Materials Science and Engineering) ; Antidormi, Aleandro (Institut Català de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia) ; Lanza, Mario (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. We report on a large improvement of the thermal stability and mechanical properties of amorphous boron-nitride upon carbon doping. By generating versatile force fields using first-principles and machine learning simulations, we investigate the structural properties of amorphous boron-nitride with varying contents of carbon (from a few percent to 40 at%). 12 p, 3.0 MB Computational assessment of the impact of Cu(II) and Al(III) on β-amyloid fibrils : Binding sites, structural stability, and possible physiological implications / Roldán-Martín, Lorena (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Química) ; Sodupe Roure, Mariona (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Química) ; Maréchal, Jean-Didier (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Química)
One of Alzheimer's disease major hallmarks is the aggregation of β-amyloid peptide, a process in which metal ions play an important role. In the present work, an integrative computational study has been performed to identify the metal-binding regions and determine the conformational impact of Cu(II) and Al(III) ion binding to the β-amyloid (Aβ) fibrillary structure. [...]

7 p, 1.0 MB Impact of electrode tip shape on catheter performance in cardiac radiofrequency ablation / Petras, Argyrios (RICAM, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Linz, Austria) ; Moreno Weidmann, Zoraida (Institut d'Investigació Biomèdica Sant Pau) ; Echeverría Ferrero, Marina (Basque Center for Applied Mathematics) ; Leoni, Massimiliano (RICAM, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Linz, Austria) ; Guerra Ramos, José María (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Medicina) ; Gerardo-Giorda, Luca (RICAM, Austrian Academy of Sciences, Linz, Austria)
The role of catheter tip shape on the safety and efficacy of radiofrequency (RF) ablation has been overlooked, although differences have been observed in clinical and research fields. The purpose of this study was to analyze the role of electrode tip shape in RF ablation using a computational model. [...]

In this paper, we develop and present a new theory of the fantastic called apperception theory. Considering research in the cognitive sciences in recent decades, especially those related to embodied simulation, mirror neurons and the space of intersubjectivity, we define the fantastic as the linkage that can arise from a mismatch of apperceptions as an anomaly, alteration or transgression of at least one of the cognitive and hermeneutic levels that operate in each narrative experience. [...]

Cognitive studies applied to literature take into consideration bodily experiences during reading. By resorting to the paradigm of embodied simulation and the theory of empathic reading, this paper develops the hypothesis of an emergent hybrid body constituted by the virtual convergence of the reader's body and the fictitious character's body. [...]

12 p, 1.3 MB A framework for agent-based models of human needs and ecological limits / Foramitti, Joël (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals)
The social and ecological challenges of our time require a better understanding of the complex interactions between the multiple dimensions of human well-being and environmental impacts. This article introduces the Needs and Limits (N&L) framework, a theoretical and computational foundation for agent-based simulations of heterogeneous individuals who try to increase their quality of life through the satisfaction of human needs.
This paper investigates the links that the artist Gerhard Richter establishes between photography and painting throughout his artistic career, initiated on 60ths. Since then, Richter's goal has been to build images, whether pictorial or photographic, whether blurry or sharp, geometric, abstract or figurative. [...]

9 p, 1.2 MB Analysis of zero inflated dichotomous variables from a Bayesian perspective : application to occupational health / Moriña, David (Centre de Recerca Matemàtica) ; Puig, Pedro (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Matemàtiques) ; Navarro Giné, Albert (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Pediatria, Obstetrícia i Ginecologia i Medicina Preventiva i Salut Pública)
Background: Zero-inflated models are generally aimed to addressing the problem that arises from having two different sources that generate the zero values observed in a distribution. In practice, this is due to the fact that the population studied actually consists of two subpopulations: one in which the value zero is by default (structural zero) and the other is circumstantial (sample zero). 22 p, 536.6 KB ¿Influyen el número de orígenes y los umbrales de confianza en las creencias en la dinámica de difusión de rumores?
Today, the actions of individuals who act, or fail to act, on the basis of a rumor can have major economic, political, and social implications. Following a review of the literature, this article proposes, firstly, a new sociological definition of rumor accounting for the concepts of uncertainty and suspicion of elite malevolence. [...]
