Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Ziveri, Patrizia (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals)
The Mediterranean Sea and its coastal systems are threatened by intense anthropogenic pressures including rapid accumulation of marine litter by diverse human activities. The region, which is the world's leading touristic destination, has to face a seasonal increase of waste generation due to the seasonal influx of visitors. [...]

Mesocosm experiments have been fundamental to investigate the effects of elevated CO and ocean acidification (OA) on planktic communities. However, few of these experiments have been conducted using naturally nutrient-limited waters and/or considering the combined effects of OA and ocean warming (OW). [...]

The lack of standardization on the definition and methods in microplastic (MP) research has limited the overall interpretation and intercomparison of published data. This has presented different solutions to assess the presence of these pollutants in the natural environment, bringing the science forward. [...]

Climate change is already transforming the seascapes of our oceans by changing the energy availability and the metabolic rates of the organisms. Among the ecosystem-engineering species that structure the seascape, marine animal forests (MAFs) are the most widespread. [...]

Microplastics (MPs) are considered pollutants that are ubiquitously distributed in aquatic environments. One of the key hotspot areas to understand fluxes of MPs entering into the oceans are transitional systems, between fresh and marine waters, where river estuaries in particular play an important role. The high-Mg calcite skeleton of Corallium rubrum was analyzed from living colonies collected from a wide range of depths (15 m to 607 m) and environmental settings in the Mediterranean Sea. An overarching goal was to better understand the calcification process and incorporation of elements into the slow-growing skeleton of both shallow and deep-water specimens, and more specifically, to clarify the veracity of geochemical proxies for reconstructing seawater temperatures. 72 p, 8.8 MB Upregulation of phytoplankton carbon concentrating mechanisms during low CO2 glacial periods and implications for the phytoplankton pCO2 proxy / Stoll, Heather (ETH Zürich) ; Guitián, José (ETH Zürich) ; Hernández-Almeida, Iván (ETH Zürich) ; Mejía, Luz María (ETH Zürich) ; Phelps, Samuel (Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory) ; Polissar, Pratigya (Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory) ; Rosenthal, Yair (Rutgers University) ; Zhang, Hongrui (ETH Zürich) ; Ziveri, Patrizia (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals)
Published alkenone εp records spanning known glacial pCO2 cycles show considerably less variability than predicted by the diffusive model for cellular carbon acquisition and isotope fractionation. We suggest this pattern is consistent with a systematic cellular enhancement of the carbon supply to photosynthesis via carbon concentrating mechanisms under the case of carbon limitation during low pCO2 glacial time periods, an effect also manifest under carbon limitation in experimental cultures of coccolithophores as well as diatoms. To understand the response of marine calcifying organisms under high CO2 scenarios, it is critical to study their calcification patterns in the natural environment. This paper focuses on a major calcifying phytoplankton group, the coccolithophores, through the analysis of water samples collected along a W-E Mediterranean transect during two research cruises, in April 2011 (Meteor cruise M84/3) and May 2013 (MedSeA cruise 2013). [...]
(open or closed). The average E. huxleyi coccolith mass along the Mediterranean oceanographic transect depended strongly on both the average coccolith length and calcification index. The variability in average coccolith length and calcification index across samples reflected oscillations in the relative abundance of the calcification varieties. [...]
