8 p, 298.9 KB Naturalizing pollution: a critical social science view on the link between potash mining and salinization in the Llobregat river basin, northeast Spain / Gorostiza, Santiago (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals) ; Saurí i Pujol, David (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Departament de Geografia)
The scientific literature distinguishes between primary or natural and secondary or human-induced salinization. Assessing this distinction is of vital importance to assign liabilities and responsibilities in pollution cases and for designing the best policy and management actions. [...]

La sucesión casi permanente de las situaciones críticas de escasez hídrica en la cuenca del río Muga ponen de manifiesto la consideración de la sequía como un riesgo natural de creciente responsabilidad social. [...]
The almost continuous succesion of critical periods of water shortage sin the La Muga river basin supports the definition of droughts as natural hazards increasingly caused by human activities. In this paper we offer a territorial survey of droughts in the La Muga basin drawn from local media sources and with the objective of assessing the spatial and temporal extent of water crises from 1950 to 2001. 20 p, 638.5 KB La polémica médica en torno al consumo de agua fría en la España Moderna / Martín Ferreira, Ana Isabel (Universidad de Valladolid) ; de la Rosa Cubo, Cristina
There was controversy around the drinking of cold water in Spain during the 16th and 17th centuries, appearing in a wide range of medical, literary and religious texts. It concerned the benefits or detriments of drinking refrigerated water, which could lead to death when consumed in excess. [...]
A lo largo de los siglos XVI y XVII tiene lugar en España una conocida polémica en torno al consumo de agua fría que recorre los textos médicos pero también los literarios e incluso ciertos escritos de carácter religioso. [...]

27 p, 1.3 MB Polycentricity in the water-energy nexus : a comparison of polycentric governance traits and implications for adaptive capacity of water user associations in Spain / Villamayor Tomás, Sergio (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. Institut de Ciència i Tecnologia Ambientals)
This paper assesses the merits of polycentricity by looking at the water-energy nexus in the Spanish irrigation sector. In the last few decades, the Spanish electricity and water governance systems have transitioned from relatively monocentric, top-down arrangements to arrangements that exhibit traits of polycentricity. [...]

To understand the response of marine calcifying organisms under high CO2 scenarios, it is critical to study their calcification patterns in the natural environment. This paper focuses on a major calcifying phytoplankton group, the coccolithophores, through the analysis of water samples collected along a W-E Mediterranean transect during two research cruises, in April 2011 (Meteor cruise M84/3) and May 2013 (MedSeA cruise 2013). [...]
(open or closed). The average E. huxleyi coccolith mass along the Mediterranean oceanographic transect depended strongly on both the average coccolith length and calcification index. The variability in average coccolith length and calcification index across samples reflected oscillations in the relative abundance of the calcification varieties. [...]
