13 p, 3.4 MB Turtle remains from the late Miocene of the Cessaniti area, southern Italy-insights for a probable Tortonian chelonian dispersal from Europe to Africa / Georgalis, Georgios (Università di Torino. Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra) ; Insacco, Gianni (Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Comiso) ; Rook, Lorenzo (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Spadola, Filippo (Università degli Studi di Messina) ; Delfino, Massimo (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
We here describe turtle remains from the late Miocene (Tortonian) of Cessaniti (Calabria, southern Italy), an area that recently has been palaeogeographically reconstructed as being, at that time of the Neogene, directly connected (or at least rather proximate) to northern Africa, instead of Europe. [...]

11 p, 35.0 MB Italy's largest snake : Redescription of palaeophis oweni from the eocene of Monte Duello, near Verona / Georgalis, Georgios (Università di Torino. Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra) ; Del Favero, Letizia (Centro di Ateneo per i Musei. Museo di Geologia e Paleontologia) ; Delfino, Massimo (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
We here redescribe Palaeophis oweni, an almost neglected species of palaeophiid snakes from the Eocene of Monte Duello, northeastern Italy. Despite having been described since the 19th century and being the only known named species of its genus from Mediterranean Europe, P. [...]

Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra e dell'Ambiente)
The Common toad Bufo bufo (Linneaus, 1758) was found for the first time in Sardinia in 2016 during her-petological surveys. The species appears to be well established in the finding area. Many adults and juveniles, tadpoles at different developmental stages, and eggs have been found during repeated monitoring. [...]

Department of Geological Sciences) ; Vasilyan, Davit (JURASSICA Museum (Switzerland)) ; Delfino, Massimo (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont)
We herein describe the fossil amphibians and reptiles from the Neogene (latest Miocene or earliest Pliocene; MN 13/14) locality of Maramena, in northern Greece. The herpetofauna is shown to be extremely diverse, comprising at least 30 different taxa. [...]

(University of Zurich. Zoological Museum and the Department of Evolutionary Biology and Environmental Studies)
Today, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aldabra Atoll is home to about 100 000 giant tortoises, Aldabrachelys gigantea, whose fossil record goes back to the Late Pleistocene. New Late Pleistocene fossils (age ca. [...]

Paläontologisches Institut und Museum) ; Sánchez, Rodolfo (Museo Paleontológico de Urumaco (Urumaco, Veneçuela)) ; Sánchez-Villagra, Marcelo R. (University of Zurich. Paläontologisches Institut und Museum)
The number of precaudal vertebrae in all extant crocodylians is remarkably conservative, with nine cervicals, 15 dorsals and two sacrals, a pattern present also in their closest extinct relatives. The consistent vertebral count indicates a tight control of axial patterning by Hox genes during development. [...]

51 p, 9.8 MB Reappraisal of the morphology and phylogenetic relationships of the alligatoroid crocodylian Diplocynodon hantoniensis from the late Eocene of the United Kingdom / Rio, Jonathan P. Department of Earth Sciences) ; Tschopp, Emanuel (American Museum of Natural History) ; Martin, Jeremy E. (Université Claude Bernard Lyon) ; Delfino, Massimo (Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont) ; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
Diplocynodon is a genus of basal alligatoroid comprising nine species, which spanned the late Palaeocene to middle Miocene of Europe. Despite recent revisions of most Diplocynodon species, one of the earliest named and most complete, Diplocynodon hantoniensis, has not been re-described for over 150 years. [...]

Small, irregular isolated bones identified as remains of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) were recovered from Mid to Late Holocene sites at Ra's al-Hamra and Ra's al-Hadd, coastal Oman. These provide the third instance of this animal being documented from any prehistoric site anywhere, and the records provide one of the oldest, if not the oldest, dates for this distinctive chelonian-even though they do not refer to fossils.
